Chegg security breach exposes 130 Rice accounts

Over 130 Rice accounts had their email addresses and passwords exposed as part of a breach that swept Chegg, a textbook rental and homework help company, over a year ago, according to Marc Scarborough, chief information security officer at the Office of Information Technology.

Students express concerns over West Lot parking

Student drivers, both new and returning, are expressing displeasure with many aspects of Rice parking policy that they say hinder the ease of using their car, such as concerns regarding flooding and availability of convenient parking and transportation to and from lots, despite the hundreds of dollars that parking permits cost.

Students attend Modi-Trump rally in Houston, protest

On Sunday morning, multiple Rice students joined thousands of attendees at a rally held for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump, while several other Rice students attended a protest outside the event, which was held at NRG Stadium.

Hanszen College Hosts First Fall Public Party in Four Years amid Copyright Concerns

Hanszen College hosted “Lights Out: Don’t Sleep on Hanszen,” described as a “pajama party you don’t want to miss” on Facebook with music from “three of the best DJs on campus.”  As Hanszen’s first fall public party in the last four years, “Lights Out” was meant to change up the Hanszen party scene, according to Jeremiah Murrell, a Hanszen social chair and senior.

MOB lets pride fly in Baylor halftime show

During halftime of the football game against Baylor University on Saturday, over 50 students and alumni from Rice and Baylor ran onto the football field bearing pride flags. The halftime show, organized by the Marching Owl Band, was a protest against Baylor’s discriminatory stance toward LGBTQ+ students, according to Chad Fisher, the public relations representative for the MOB.

Architecture hall enters predesign phase

Students, faculty and staff of the Rice School of Architecture met with Jeannette Kuo of the Swiss architecture firm Karamuk Kuo last week to discuss the potential design of Cannady Hall, a future expansion on the School of Architecture currently housed in Anderson Hall.

H&D expands trash collection system change

Housing & Dining has implemented a trash collection system in the South Colleges that requires students to remove their own trash from their rooms, expanding a system that was already in place in North Colleges, according to H&D’s operations directors Beth Leaver and Brad Thacker.

Handshake to replace Rice Job Board

Handshake, a national career database for students, is replacing the online Rice Job Board and changing the hiring process for campus-wide jobs and internships. However, the work-study jobs posted on the old Job Board have yet to be transferred onto Handshake.

A new all-in-one online dashboard, Owlnest, designed to coordinate campus events and activities, was introduced at the beginning of the fall semester by the Rice Student Center.

Rice receives part of grant for minorities in STEM

The National Science Foundation awarded a grant of 1.9 million dollars to Rice in August, as part of a collective 2.7 million dollar grant alongside the University of Houston and Texas Southern University to investigate and alleviate the issue of underrepresentation of minority groups in STEM fields.

Rice Young Democrats host over 40 local candidates

Two days after national attention was focused on Houston for the Democratic debate, the Rice Young Democrats hosted their own event to promote local elections — the races for Houston mayor, controller and the city council — and to decide who should be endorsed by a coalition that includes the RYD.

Vaping draws admin concern

Amid the ongoing investigation by the Center for Disease Control into the outbreak of lung disease and its ties to vaping, Dean of Undergraduates Bridget Gorman sent an email to the magisters directing them to pass on information warning students of the possible health risks of electronic cigarette use.

Rice falls to No. 17 in 2020 US News rankings

Rice dropped a place in the recently released 2020 U.S. News & World Report National Universities rankings, tying with Cornell University at No. 17. Last year, Rice was tied with Cornell at No. 16 and the previous year Rice was in a four-way tie for No. 14.

Leebron shares slavery task force progress at Senate

In an email sent out to the Rice community, President David Leebron and Interim Provost Seiichi Matsuda gave an update on the task force on slavery, segregation and racial injustice, including the expected budget, timline and the new co-chairs, professors Alexander X. Byrd and Caleb McDaniel.

The Hoot adjusts menu, expands hours

The Hoot has undergone two major changes this semester, expanding their operating hours to Fridays and Saturdays and adding a chicken sandwich from Smashburger to their menu. The addition came after The Hoot announced last semester that they would be discontinuing the sale of menu items from Chick-fil-A.
