Rice hosts automation summit

While most Rice students were studying for finals in early December, a collection of entrepreneurs, academics and researchers gathered at the BioSciences Research Collaborative for three days to discuss the future impact of automation and artificial intelligence on human work in the De Lange Conference X, entitled “Humans, Machines and the Future of Work.”“To me, it’s the university at its best,” Rice President David Leebron said.

Rice President David Leebron presented his State of the University report to the Student Association Senate meeting Monday evening.Leebron said the university has grown stronger over the past decade, evidenced by the more than doubling of the number of applicants and the increased diversity of the student body.



Rice Engineering Alumni donates $50k to improve MECH lab classes

Rice Engineering Alumni has committed $50,000 to improving laboratory classes in the mechanical engineering department. The funding comes in response to student concerns raised over the past six months regarding outdated curriculum and facilities, including at a highly attended town hall meeting last semester.


Alternative homecoming shirt sale raises scam suspicion

With homecoming weekend approaching, a two-day weekend sale of homecoming shirts targeting Rice students resulted in more than 100 students placing orders — but some now say they feel misled after realizing that the shirts have no association with Rice, and others on campus have warned that the entire sale may be a scam.Inkonit, a small South Dakota company, launched the sale through a Facebook page over the weekend.




MOB calls out Baylor's sexual assault scandal, Rice apologizes amid national attention

The halftime show at the Rice University vs. Baylor University football game on Friday attracted national attention over the weekend after Rice’s Marching Owl Band referenced Baylor’s recent sexual assault scandal in their performance. Many national news and sports media including ESPN, NBC Sports, Fox Sports and the Washington Post published articles regarding the show and a subsequent apology to Baylor fans released by Rice’s administration on Saturday.









Newly created SA associate vice president position filled

James Carter, a Brown College junior, was confirmed as Student Association Associate Vice President at the April 13 meeting of the SA Senate. As associate vice president, a position which was newly created this month by a Senate bill, Carter will assist SA President Griffin Thomas on diversity-related projects.Thomas, a Lovett College junior, said Carter will work on Senate, student body and administration diversity.
