Letter to the Editor: Lovett is not a toaster

To the Editor, Being a Bakerite, it never really bothered me that Lovett College looked like a toaster (which it does from some angles). However, now I know a current student at Lovett, and I could tell that “Toaster College” was not their favorite nickname.

Freshman guard Lott adds top tier talent to men's basketball

After suffering a season-ending knee injury before the start of last year, redshirt freshman guard Chad Lott is geared up to begin his Rice basketball career. Lott, a 6-foot-3-inch shooting guard from Shreveport, Louisiana, was a three-star recruit and nominee for McDonald's All-American as a Byrd High School senior.

Senior forward Goodwine getting better with age

With less than a second remaining in in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament and Rice clinging to a 61-60 lead over Louisiana Tech University, senior forward Jasmine Goodwine fouled Brooke Pumroy on a fadeaway jumper, sending the Lady Techsters’ shooting guard to the free throw line with a chance to win the game.

Rice Engineering Alumni donates $50k to improve MECH lab classes

Rice Engineering Alumni has committed $50,000 to improving laboratory classes in the mechanical engineering department. The funding comes in response to student concerns raised over the past six months regarding outdated curriculum and facilities, including at a highly attended town hall meeting last semester.

REMS creates endowment in celebration of 20th anniversary

In celebration of their 20th anniversary, Rice Emergency Medical Services announced the establishment of the Rice University EMS endowment, which will benefit one outstanding graduating REMS senior pursuing further medical education, according to REMS Director Lisa Basgall.

RUPD continues to bolster active shooter protocol

In light of recent violent events in the nearby Houston area, including an armed robbery on campus in October and a mass shooter in the area in late September, members of Rice University Police Department responded to questions about Rice’s protocol for gunmen near campus with assurances that response plans have been well prepared.

New deputy treasurer poses no conflict of interest

As the role of the treasurer has expanded in recent years, the idea of a deputy treasurer has been discussed extensively and the Executive Team and the Student Association Senate determined it would be invaluable for the SA to add a deputy treasurer to allow the organization to function more efficiently.

Humanities minors not useless

To the Editors, Your article on new minors, published on Oct. 26, concludes with a student expressing her sense that the new cinema and media studies minor is “useless.” People often say that humanities majors and minors are not practical in the real world.
