History of presidential platforms reveals SA discontent

Freddy Cavallaro’s call to restructure the Student Association Senate may be the first such campaign in current students’ memories, but it is at home in Rice’s history. Between 2003 and 2014, at least six campaigns aimed to achieve goals including shifting power to residential colleges and increasing voter turnout in SA elections, but none won elections.

MECH department restructures curriculum

The Rice mechanical engineering department is overhauling its major requirements beginning in Fall 2019 including reducing the number of required hours and adding specializations, according to department head Laura Schaefer.

DeSTIgma event to offer free STI tests

The Student Association is hosting the university’s first Sexually Transmitted Infection testing party, which will offer free STI testing, according to Hannah Kim, the Student Health Services and Accessibility Committee co-chair.

Senate votes down Green Fund initiative

The Student Association Senate voted not to include a constitutional amendment to increase annual student fees to support the Green Fund on the general election ballot by a vote of 12 yes to nine no, with five members abstaining.

Medical school offers humanities pre-meds direct entry

Rice University and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston are partnering to create a direct-entry program into McGovern Medical School for humanities students aiming to increase intellectual diversity amongst doctors, according to the Rice Office of Public Affairs.

Seventeen car burglaries occur on, nearby campus

Seven vehicles in the North College Lot and 10 vehicles in the First Christian Church & School parking lot were burglarized at approximately 1:20 a.m. Monday morning, according to an email from the Rice University Police Department.
