'Carnage' delivers with a disturbing portrait of humanity

Carnage is one of those rare films that is able to tactfully weave humor into uncomfortable and sometimes depressing situations. When it wants us to laugh, we laugh. When it wants us to cringe, we do that too. At the same time, it reveals a lot about us as men and women, as parents and children, and as couples and individuals. Despite the title, this film is not some kind of Shakespearean tragedy that climaxes in a bloodbath that kills everybody. It is not about carnage of the body but of the mind, heart and soul.

BISF Debates: Should importance be placed on politicians' personal lives

Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich came under media criticism in the latest Republican debate about his ex-wife's allegation that he asked her for an "open marriage." Incidents such as this are common, yet no consensus has been reached on how much a candidate's personal life should affect his or her ability to govern. However, a candidate's moral compass, including personal issues, cannot simply be ignored when he is running for an office such as president — one that demands a high degree of moral courage and strength.

Audiences go haywire out of boredom

Rumored by critics as the female version of the famous Bourne franchise, Haywire does not even come close to living up to its expectations. Steven Soderbergh's film lacks polish with a poorly written script, unexciting musical score and sub-par acting by the protagonist.

BISF Debates: Should importance be placed on politicians' personal lives

What marked the beginning of the CNN Republican presidential debate in South Carolina was neither a question about the future of Iran nor a philosophical question about the role of government in our society. Rather, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich was asked to comment on allegations that he sought an open marriage with his ex-wife. This question not only gave Gingrich a chance to verbally crucify the "liberal media establishment," but also made me consider the deeper problem that our culture has become astoundingly superficial.

Servery Creations: Hot and Heavy: The Panini

The word "panini" literally means "bread roll" in Italian, but colloquially it has come to mean any sandwich that has been toasted in a weighted press. So those are our rules: We must craft a sandwich that through the process of toasting and pressing magically transforms the common cold-cut into the dense, delectable edible that we know as the panini. The most important idea to keep in mind when crafting your panini is that the sandwich section is only the beginning. The real secret is learning how to effectively use the rest of the servery to incorporate new flavors into the sandwich.

Rondelet cancellation a result of venue selection and subpar advertising scheme

The Rice Program Council hosted winter formal, Rondelet, has been canceled due to an apparent lack of interest (see story, pg. 1). Upon selling a mere 20 tickets in the first week of sales, the RPC elected to terminate the event instead of risk enduring a financial loss during the event. RPC was forced to absorb losses already once this year when Esperanza failed to meet the projected sales of 1,000 tickets to cover the cost of the larger Hobby Center venue.

Words on the street: Worst case scenario

Dramatic images of the sun exploding and our entire universe being swallowed by a giant, gaping black hole collide with the less extreme: We could forget to turn the toaster off and find our breakfast burnt from negligence or sleep through an alarm on the morning of an all-important job interview. Worst-case scenarios are a constant focus in our lives, culture and society, and not only for the pessimists among us–or those following the Mayan calendar. The Lawndale Art Center has kick-started a new monthly "Speakeasy" discussion group to provoke conversation on contemporary cultural issues with this year's inaugural meeting tackling the theme of "Worst Case Scenario."
