Volleyball goes 1-2 on conference road trip

The Owls earned their extra miles this week as they flew across three time zones in two days to face off against University of Texas- El Paso and the University of Central Florida on the road. Rice was looking to repeat its sweep of UTEP earlier in the season and wanted to get revenge against UCF for a 3-1 defeat at home on Oct. 14. The Owls could not fare better as again they took care of UTEP on the road, but fell for the second time against the Golden Knights.

Baker 13 runner breaks library window

Few associate nudity and breaking glass with a Monday night in Fondren, but this Halloween, one of Rice's most famous traditions went rear-first into the school library. While running the Halloween Baker 13 this past Friday, Baker College junior Duncan Eddy broke a window at Fondren Library, apparently with his behind.

Seductive musical remake of cult classic

Some people go trick-or -reating on Halloween. Some run Baker 13. Others get dressed in ridiculous costumes and go see cult film The Rocky Horror Picture Show at midnight at the River Oaks Theater. Sid Richardson College's newest production brings the classic to a theater — live — near you. Although inconsistent acting and poorly executed design detract from the musical's quality, Sid's newest creation is a treat for anyone turned on by hilarity and steamy romances.

Classic Flicks: Crimes and Misdemeanors darkens comedy

Born Allen Stewart Konigsberg, Woody Allen is one of a handful of Renaissance men in the film industry. Even in his seventh decade, he has kept up the pace of releasing about one film a year, if not more; he released Midnight in Paris to widespread critical acclaim this past summer, and is currently working on the film Nero Fiddled, which is set for release in 2012. Apparently, I am not alone in my admiration: film-making legend Francis Ford Coppola himself once wished that to be able write as freely as Woody Allen did so that he would not have to always work from another writer's screenplay.

IMAX Hubble 3D gives astronomical scenes

Rice University engineering students are extremely attached to the idea that hard work in college equates to incredible post-graduate payoffs. But how many engineers foresee knighthood as a possible fringe benefit? Last year, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands knighted Edward Cheung to honor him for his work and outreach as the head engineer of the Hubble Space Telescope Development Project. This honor came on the heels of the final servicing mission in 2009 to repair the Hubble Space Telescope.

Rice professor shows great integrity amid censorship scandal

Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Professor John Anderson has become a local media focus since his censorship spat with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (see story pg. 1). The commission removed many facts that pointed toward human-caused global warming. However, Anderson refused to have his data presented in this manner. By revoking his publication from the state agency, Anderson exemplified the highest standard of integrity in his decision to withdraw his publication. In the cut throat world of academia, a professor's stature is determined in large part on his or her publications. Anderson, in his decision to choose no publication over a censored publication, represents exactly the kind of integrity Rice stands for. The decision was one which placed principles over prestige and the truth over fanfare, and this choice should be respected.

Trends on Campus Hereupon, don some chiffon

If you've ever pulled out your holiday dress and wondered what the sheer, soft fabric on top is made of, chances are it's chiffon. This lightweight material can be found as fancy overlays on formal gowns, but it can be found in blouses, scarves, and lingerie. Jones College senior Lillian Meyer wore a magenta chiffon dress to the Jones Associates Night, demonstrating how elegant the fabric can look. She cinched the dress in the middle, accentuating her waist. All she needed is a pair of metallic flats or contrasting jewelry to dress up this simple look.
