$40 million updates

Football players may be next in line to benefit from a new building at Rice. A $40 million proposal for a new two-story football training facility at the south end of the stadium came out last week and is contingent on an approval from the Rice Board of Trustees as well as fundraising for the necessary money.

On the electron superhighway

Forget cars racing along highways and start thinking electrons. Physics professor Rui-Rui Du and fourth year physics graduate student Ivan Knez have created and recently published on a topological insulator, described as an "electron superhighway". Their research is paving the way to the creation of topological insulator superconductor junctions and, eventually, quantum computers.

Class ring changes start new era of ring traditions

In an attempt to get more students interested in Rice class rings, a student-initiated ring committee in conjunction with the Association of Rice Alumni implemented its first plans, including ring ambassadors, proposing college crests on rings and more senior-alumni events.

Across a variety of events, Families Weekend succeeds

Mosquitoes were not the only ones buzzing around campus this weekend. Oct. 20-23 marked Rice's annual Families Weekend. Over 2,200 families entered the hedges to participate in a variety of events, ranging from sitting in on classes to attending tailgates and even a 1920's-themed public party at Baker College, Baker Blues.

Academic Cup at Rice

Three Hanszen College seniors have begun developing an Academic Cup competition similar to the athletic competition provided by the President's Cup to encourage scholastic rivalry. Head Academic Fellows and seniors at Hanszen College Raymond Verm and Apoorv Bhargava and Hanszen college senior Travis San Pedro, think this idea will be instrumental in raising awareness of the fellows program campus wide.

Seniors toast to 2012

Seniors reminisce about their time at Rice over food and drinks at the Senior Toast on Thursday, Oct. 13 in the Rice Gallery courtyard. More than 120 seniors donated $2,800 to the senior class gift. Senior were encouraged to donate $20.12 to honor this year's class.
