Baker Institute creates Center for Energy Studies

The Baker Institute for Public Policy established a Center for Energy Studies that will serve as an umbrella for energy and environmental studies, according to Senior Director for the Center for Energy Studies Kenneth Medlock. The center was created with the intention of engaging more broadly with other energy and environmental initiatives on campus, Medlock said.

Banners up for Centennial

In the spirit of the upcoming Centennial, the Rice Inner Loop now sports its own walking guide to the history of the university. A hundred Centennial-themed banners recently replaced the owl banners that hung on light posts. The banners display short historical events and can be read in sequential order by following them down the Inner Loop from Tudor Fieldhouse.

On the electron superhighway

Forget cars racing along highways and start thinking electrons. Physics professor Rui-Rui Du and fourth year physics graduate student Ivan Knez have created and recently published on a topological insulator, described as an "electron superhighway". Their research is paving the way to the creation of topological insulator superconductor junctions and, eventually, quantum computers.
