Men's Tennis still lives on tournament bubble

The countdown to the NCAA tournament is on, and the Owls know that they do not have much room for error. Rice left the court this weekend with mixed results as they easily defeated Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi 6-1 on Friday afternoon but fumbled a momentous chance to boost their NCAA tournament chances as they fell to the University of Oklahoma 6-1 early Sunday afternoon.

Will Rice approval unnecessary for cohesion

For a moment, reading Eddie Reyes's editorial "Will Rice Stays Strong During Beer Bike" reminded me of an episode from NBC's "The Office" entitled "Conflict Resolution." In the show, office prankster Jim Halpert reads through an HR file of complaints made against him by the perpetual butt of his jokes, co-worker and pseudo-nemesis Dwight Schrute. As the list of hilarious shenanigans trails on, the audience notices a tinge of discomfort in Jim's voice as he mutters to the camera, "You know, these actually don't sound that funny one after another." I very honestly caught myself asking myself: "Is it all too much?" Are we too excessive in our mock loathing of the good men and women of Will Rice College during Willy Week?

Football ends spring practice with high hopes

Over the course of the past month, the Rice Owls took to the gridiron for their annual spring practices, taking an opportunity to hit the field to find out what they have coming into the next season. Capping two weeks of spring practices, the Owls were excited to play three scrimmages, and on March 30, the team had its annual Blue and Gray game, showcasing the offense against the defense.

Changes to Beer Bike '12 need further alterations

Let's get one thing straight: You can't kill Beer Bike. Even if the administration, Rice Program Council and the entire Beer Bike Committee put their heads together and actually tried, they'd be hard-pressed to destroy what has been described as Christmas, New Year's and (insert all things good here) all rolled into one. So looking back, it seems a little ludicrous that everyone following the Beer Bike planning process, myself included, acted as though they were canceling Beer Bike altogether every time even the smallest of changes was proposed. As we saw last weekend, Beer Bike was a roaring success, even if it was slightly diminished by the altered form.

Service improvements announced by Greyhound and Amtrak last month promise to make traveling to and from Houston faster and more convenient, especially for travelers on a budget. Greyhound introduced its Greyhound Express bus service between Houston and Austin, and Amtrak will modify the schedule of the New Orleans to Los Angeles Sunset Limited train to serve Houston during daylight hours.

Roasted: Double Trouble

Caffeine is the one substance that college students need throughout the day. Alcohol is the one substance we love to drink throughout the night. So what happens when you combine the two? Double Trouble. Located right off of the METRORail at the Houston Community College stop, Double Trouble Caffeine and Cocktails is a lounge for both coffee drinkers and alcohol drinkers. There is no need to fret if you are under 21 - you can still go in for a quick espresso drink, sit on the patio and enjoy the hip Midtown scene. This shop is quite the ?eclectic shindig.

Freshmen LPAP reserves ludicrous

While the changes in the Lifetime Physical Activity Program are a move in the right direction by the Student Association, there are still problems with the program (see story, pg. 1). New students will have priority with half of the available spots reserved in a given LPAP. While the Thresher endorses the decision to give new students a chance at registering for an LPAP, the SA needs to reconsider giving away 50 percent of the seats to new students over rising seniors.

NetID problem causes outage

Students accessing Rice Webmail and OwlSpace Wednesday morning hit a wall when they were unable to log in using their NetIDs. This blockage and shutdown of the "Rice Owls" wireless network later in the day caused IT to conduct a reboot of the NetID system at 5 p.m.

?"Bacon Fat" goes straight to the heart

Contrary to this year's Mavis C. Pitman Exhibition's title, "This and That and Bacon Fat," the Visual and Dramatic Arts Gallery, tucked inside the Rice Media Center, lacks any evidence of bacon or its fat. While lacking in some of its title's labeling, the exhibition, which features the works of visual and dramatic arts majors Claudia Casbarian, Christine Cooper, Ivan Perez and Elliot SoRelle, does inspire viewers with its collections of some of "this" and some of "that."
