Shepherd to build new opera house in West Lot

Rice alumnus Charles Renfro (Will Rice ‘89) will be the lead architect for the Shepherd School of Music’s new opera theater, which is scheduled to begin construction just west of Alice Pratt Brown Hall in mid-2015, External Relations Coordinator for the Shepherd School of Music Holli Clements said.

Provost George McLendon has decided to leave his position after his five-year term ends in June 2015. McLendon is stepping down to concentrate more on teaching and research, according to a March 11 email sent to the Rice community by President David Leebron.

After a formal investigation, a Grand Jury has decided not to indict two Rice University Police Department officers on allegations of misconduct regarding a bike theft incident in August 2013, according to RUPD Chief Johnny Whitehead

The Rice University Neuroscience Department has created a steering committee to put together a proposal for a neuroscience major to university administration, according to Neuroscience Department Director David Dickman.

Impact of SAT changes on Rice admission standards unclear

Although College Board recently announced plans to focus the SAT on skills practical in a university setting, Vice President for Enrollment Chris Munoz said he will defer judgement on how it will impact admissions until the exact changes are revealed on April 16.

Tuition increases at lower rate

Undergraduate tuition will increase 4.2 percent next year from $38,260 to $39,880, according to Vice President for Finance Kathy Collins. This will raise the total cost of attendance — which includes tuition, $686 in mandatory fees and $13,400 for room and board — by 3.9 percent, from $51,941 to $53,966.
