Administration, SA seek student input on Rice’s future

In response to Rice University President David Leebron’s call for student participation in the Second Vision for the Second Century, the Student Association Senate introduced legislation at its Jan. 9 meeting to create a committee that will seek input on student values and priorities, and is currently soliciting applications for five members.

“May have gone too far”: MOB spurs sexual assault discussion

Band members, students and administration reacted to the Rice Marching Owl Band after its halftime performance at last Friday’s football game drew attention to the opposing Baylor University’s recent cover-up of sexual assault and attracted national coverage. Clarifying the administration’s position, Dean of Undergraduates John Hutchinson said the MOB sparked an important dialogue about sexual violence.

Dash and dine: Housing and Dining introduces pilot programs

Three pilot programs for meal service, namely Saturday dinner, a later dinner option on weekdays and grab-and-go breakfast are coming to Seibel, South and North serveries respectively, according to Housing and Dining Senior Business Director David McDonald. He said he hopes the projects will respond to various student needs, ranging from financial constraints, time restrictions and scheduling conflicts.

Student concerns spur MECH changes

The mechanical engineering department has taken steps this summer to address understaffing and underfunding issues, following student complaints at a town hall organized by undergraduates in the spring. In addition to hiring four new faculty members, the department will also restructure some lab courses and work with a newly founded undergraduate advisory council to improve the student experience.

Campus store comes under new management

The former Rice Bookstore and Recharge U have come under new management and combined under the banner of Rice University Campus Store. Beyond meeting students’ textbook needs and featuring more products at lower prices, the new store will strive to tap into the residential college culture and have a bigger presence around campus, according to Manager Matt Erskin.
