Trends on Campus: Not Your Little Brother's Skateboard

So you're slogging to class, late as usual, and the shuttle has already pulled away from the curb just ahead. If only you had a faster form of transportation than your legs — one that doesn't need to be padlocked. Out of the corner of your eye, you see a blur of movement as a student goes zooming past on a skateboard. He is just one of the increasing number of students at Rice University who use unconventional boards to get around campus.

Classic Flicks: Bergman

Few directors can claim to be more influential than Ingmar Bergman. Martin Scorsese said, "I guess I'd put it like this: If you were alive in the '50s and the '60s and of a certain age, a teenager on your way to becoming an adult, and you wanted to make films, I don't see how you couldn't be influenced by Bergman." Woody Allen, an unlikely disciple, said that Bergman was "probably the greatest film artist, all things considered, since the invention of the motion picture camera."

Cross country impresses at Pre-National Invite

Coaches across the entire spectrum of sports continually yearn for their team to exceed expectations. The coaches of the men's and women's cross country teams need not yearn any longer, as both contingents of runners ran well at the Houston Baptist University/Puma Invitational on Oct. 7 and at the Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 16.

The Thing not worth watching

Good horror films have anxiety-filled silent moments, loads of blood and gore and a screaming girl; the better ones are unpredictable and give you nightmares. Van Heijningen Jr.'s The Thing is not one of those movies. With its mediocre cast and predictable plot, The Thing fails to deliver as an epic horror film.

Seniors toast to 2012

Seniors reminisce about their time at Rice over food and drinks at the Senior Toast on Thursday, Oct. 13 in the Rice Gallery courtyard. More than 120 seniors donated $2,800 to the senior class gift. Senior were encouraged to donate $20.12 to honor this year's class.

Hitting the catwalk at Houston Fashion Week

Fashion Houston 2011 brought global icons to the Houston community, elevating Houston's identity as a new fashion capital. International designers, red carpet VIPs and a spectacular venue were just a few of the elements making the second annual fashion event at the Wortham Center memorable. The event revealed the thriving fashion and business community of Houston. Guests from Los Angeles to Holland expressed comments about Houston's emerging vibrancy, showing how Fashion Houston 2011 brought a global perspective to the city.

Bayou City Art Festival: Even with rain, artists shine

Houston's fickle weather has not been kind to the festival scene this fall. Though the 40th Annual Bayou City Art Festival Downtown, held Oct. 8 and 9, enjoyed large crowds on Saturday, sales suffered when the sunny forecast yielded to a torrential downpour Sunday afternoon. Regardless, the artisans featured at the festival chalked their weekend up to a positive experience.

What's Their Secret

Devika Subramanian grew up in a college campus neighborhood in Rourkela, a relatively small steel town in the eastern part of India with a population of around 100,000. She said that she has always been very interested in science and math, and her family, friends and teachers were all very encouraging with her interest.

Soccer stuck in the middle of C-USA pack

With just three conference matches remaining, the soccer team is currently looking at possibly missing out on the conference postseason tournament. What started off as a 3-1-0 record in Conference USA action has now devolved into a 4-3-1 record that leaves Rice in a three-way tie for fifth place and, in terms of a berth in the C-USA Championship Tournament, is on the outside looking in.

Rice students donate time, energy to Habit for Humanity

Rice University is sponsoring the construction of a house through Houston Habitat for Humanity in honor of Rice's Centennial celebration. The entire Rice community is working together to sponsor the project, and is trying to raise $65,000 by Feb. 2012. Six students from the Rice School of Architecture will design the Rice Centennial House with a design consultation from the Houston Habitat for Humanity. The house will be built over six weekends in March and April of next year. The project is intended to reinforce Rice's Culture of Care, as well as to unite students of different colleges with the surrounding community.

Families weekend arrives

Rice University is gearing up to host an expected 1,500 friends and family members of Rice students beginning Thursday, October 20. Jennifer Harding, Director of Reunion Programs and Special Events, in conjunction with the Student Steering Committee, led by Student Association External Vice President, Sanjula Jain, has worked diligently to plan this year's Rice Families Weekend 2011.

Centennial Celebration

Rice hosted its semiannual Town Hall meeting in the Shepherd School of Music's Stude Concert Hall on Wednesday morning. An audience comprised largely of faculty and staff filled the auditorium to listen to President David Leebron make a special presentation in celebration of Rice Day and the university's 99th birthday.
