Rice must reevaluate its academic support systems

As a senior who has been both a Peer Academic Advisor and an Academic Fellow, I have formed some critical opinions on both of these programs, especially with regards to the lack of communication between the heads of the college-specific programs and their teams, as well as between the Office of Academic Advising and the collective bodies of PAAs and Fellows/Mentors.

The fall of empathy and rise of Donald Trump

If you’re like me, you’ve watched with dismay over recent months as Donald Trump sped to the front of the pack of Republican presidential nominee hopefuls. If you’re like me, you’ve bemusedly asked yourself, “Who is voting for this guy?” I’ve spent much time thinking about politics in my political science coursework and during internships in Congress, the U.S. Department of Education and the White House. But it wasn’t until I set aside politics and began thinking about my hometown, a small municipality in upstate New York, that an answer emerged: Donald Trump is winning because his campaign is founded on false empathy.

Beer Bike Violations & Fines

"Wiess has been quite heavily fined in the past - most notably for having too many people on our float: the Warpig. The Warpig was also especially difficult to turn because -- surprise -- its wheels don't turn. We have taken steps to both reduce the number of fines Wiess is penalized this year, and to make the Warpig easily to pull. We plan to print out unfathomably numerous copies of the Violations List and paste them around the college; as well as in front of every public urinal and bathroom stall in the college. Wiessmen will be making the most of their time on the toilet this week as they inform themselves of the plethora of things they should keep from doing Saturday morning. Finally, the money we expect to save on Beer Bike can be put towards making our float a bit more suitable for being pulled around the inner loop." - Kunal Shah, Wiess A breakdown of some of the stranger fines for our fine Rice tradition.

Onwenu releases statement stepping down as EVP-elect

After close discussion with family, friends and mentors, I have decided to step down from my role as 2016-2017 Student Association External Vice President. Given recent personal circumstances, I believe this is the best decision for myself and for the SA. I love Rice and I have truly enjoyed serving students through the SA over the past two years. I cannot thank the people who have supported me through this process enough.
