Students walking past the Brochstein Pavilion in February will notice a new artistic addition to the university. A permanent art installation by Jaume Plensa called "Mirror" will be arriving on campus next month.
On the heels of the recently approved $44.5 million new athletics facility and football stadium renovation projects by the Rice University board of trustees, President David Leebron and Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan hosted Rice student-athletes, alumni, boosters and faculty at the Rice Athletics Public Forum Jan. 19 in the Shepherd School of Music's Stude Hall to share their vision of Rice athletics and take questions from the audience.
A Habitat for Humanity volunteer, group president and enthusiast, McMurty College senior Tawfik Jarjour is directing the Rice Centennial House Project, who goal is to fully design and fund a Habitat House through Rice's chapter of the organization.
The Rice University Police Department arrested and charged a man with attempted burglary of a motor vehicle, criminal trespassing and possession of marijuana on Jan. 12 after a Rice student allegedly saw the suspect attempting to open the doors and trunks of multiple cars near Entrance 23 in North Lot.
International Criminal Court Investigation Coordinator Alex Whiting spoke on Jan. 19 to a group of students, faculty and outside guests on the ICC's mission to correct international violations of justice. Whiting, who works for the Office of the Prosecutor in the ICC, began with a quote from the beginning of the Nuremberg Trials from Justice Robert H. Jackson.

For the third time in the last four years, Rondelet has been canceled. The Rice Program Council announced the decision last Friday at the Rice Memorial Center and through Facebook.
A few minutes past seven on the night of Jan. 18, as students waited on Intramural Fields 2 and 3, the fields' new lights turned on to fanfare, illuminating the area within a few seconds.

This August, Rachel Carlson (Martel '11) will be traveling overseas for postgraduate education thanks to the George Mitchell Scholarship. Out of 300 applicants, Carlson was one of 12 chosen to receive the scholarship for the 2012- 2013 academic year. She will study at Trinity College Dublin where she will pursue an master's in Environment and Development.
Students walking to their first classes of the new year had to get past more than just their snooze buttons. According to weather data on the university website, Rice's campus received 4.98 inches of rain Monday, flooding roads and parking lots in and around the university.
After receiving 4.98 inches of rain parts of campus flooded Monday morning forcing some off-campus students, faculty and staff to stay home until the water drained. Those on-campus who ventured outside braved water that was more than a foot deep in places. While some students waded across the Inner Loop to get to class, others put on their swimsuits and took advantage of the weather or helped stranded motorists move their cars out of flooded intersections.
