Rice is often praised for its unique ability to foster community through the residential college system. As a key site of interaction for students and faculty, residential colleges allow students to build relationships with adult members of the Rice community including associates, college coordinators, magisters and resident associates. As individuals that students tend to interact with on a daily basis, RAs hold arguably the most crucial role on the administrative team. Their role, Rice University Office of the Dean of Undergraduates, is to serve as both “positive community facilitator[s]” and “role models” while providing “guidance and leadership to college members.”
Many Americans work hard within our electoral system to shape our country in a positive way. Dismissing their efforts minimizes them and in doing so demonstrates troublesome entitlement. Activism requires a certain amount of time, effort and privilege to work. Not everyone has the resources to engage in activism, but voting is a right, not a privilege, that we must promote.
A recent op-ed criticized Rice’s administration for publicly supporting Dreamers. The author, Anson Fung, stated, “Rice’s mission statement summarizes that ‘Rice University aspires to [cultivate] a diverse community of learning and discovery that produces leaders across the spectrum of human endeavor’” and that Rice should be “cultivating an environment where ideas are free from prejudice.” Anson claims that the administration should not take stances on “contentious” political issues like Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, considering that Hanszen College was split on the Bar Removal of Individuals Who Dream and Grow Our Economy Act.
