Ants rain down from Lovett College bathroom ceiling

Ants are still falling from the ceiling of a Lovett College bathroom as of Tuesday after Housing and Dining exterminated a nest of ants living in a light fixture last Wednesday, according to Bailey Covell, who lives in the suite, which is in a Lovett building colloquially called “Stinky” by students.

Business & Pleasure: A conversation with Paul Hester

“Business & Pleasure: Fifty Years of Photographs by Paul Hester,“ hosted in the Rice Media Center, was packed — Hester later commented to me that it was a good thing the fire marshal didn’t stop by. Fans, former students and fellow colleagues jammed into the space to look at a range of work.

The Magnolia City Speakeasy: A Rice student’s Underground, Vegan Pop-up

When Elana Margosis picks up the phone for our FaceTime interview, the sound of steaming floods the background. This can only mean one thing — Margosis is cooking. The steam, she tells me, comes from a vegan flan recipe she’s workshopping for her monthly pop-up dinner, the Magnolia City Speakeasy, where she invites guests into her home and cooks a three-course, plant-based meal for them.

Rice community celebrates MLK day with visit from Houston mayor, parade

After students voiced concerns about the dilapidated state of Rice’s float, Rice students, alumni, faculty and staff honored Martin Luther King Jr. weekend by participating in Houston’s MLK march and attending an on-campus vigil featuring speakers including Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Rice President David Leebron.

Nine-time Texas state champion Rice Rugby turns 50

Just two years after Rice started charging tuition and five years after Doc C first graced the university’s hallowed halls, Stewart Morris Jr. (‘71) arrived on campus as a transfer from the University of Virginia. The year was 1968, and Morris soon discovered that there was no rugby club yet extant at his new school.

Exploring TFTI: On the hunt for the perfect Houston Instagram photo

Nestled in between an Edwards Theater and a Dave & Busters is a previously abandoned entertainment center. Now emblazoned with the words TFTI, a self-proclaimed “pop-up experience” has set up house. Its subsequent success highlights its role as the next iteration in Houston’s kitsch art scene and the associated Houstonian hunt for the perfect Instagram photo.

Discussing Division: Obama, Baker tackle bipartisanship

The president of Rice University introduced the former president of the United States to the crowd at the Baker Institute’s 25th Anniversary Gala by listing three things the Thresher Backpage wrote 11 years ago that the two men have in common. Both David Leebron and Barack Obama attended Harvard Law School, served as presidents of the Harvard Law Review and married women who are way out of their league.
