HERE celebrates hip hop in Houston

Rice rolled out the red carpet Tuesday to honor the first recipient of the Houston Enriches Rice Education Project Legacy Award. Students, professors and Houston rappers gathered March 23 in Keck 100 for the ceremony, where a panel discussed the significance and contribution of hip hop in Houston over the last 25 years. Houston Enriches Rice Education, known as the HERE Project, began in 2007 as an effort to help immerse students in culture under the direction of Humanities Professor Anthony Pinn.

GSA set to remain with Honor Council

Graduate students may go to Valhalla instead of Willy's Pub and attend Graduate Student Association meetings instead of Student Association meetings, but they have decided to continue to be judged by the same Honor Council as undergraduates.On Oct. 7, the Faculty Senate proposed that the GSA establish a separate Honor Council for graduate students. However, through a vote by the GSA officers following that recommendation, the GSA has determined it will not change the current process, GSA President Kristjan Stone said.

Fondren celebrates 60

Fondren Library may not see many parties, but as its 60-year anniversary approaches, the storied library will soon be hosting its own shindig. On Wednesday, Fondren's anniversary festivities will include parties for students, staff members and a panel focusing on the library's evolution. The event is sponsored by the Friends of Fondren Library, a supportive branch of the library that funds its collections and facilities.

Martel seeks new masters

For any faculty member interested in becoming a college master, this may be the year to apply. A total of four residential colleges - Baker College, Duncan College, Martel College and McMurtry College - are looking for new masters for next year. Martel was the first to begin their search for a new master, assembling a Master Search Committee early this month. The committee will search for masters to take the position that will open up once Earth Sciences Professor Jerry Dickens' and Michelle McCormick's five-year tenure ends this May.

IT encourages cyber security

Phishers beware: This October marks the sixth-annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month, an initiative started by the Department of Homeland Security's National Cyber Security Division. This is the fourth year Rice has participated in this event, which includes weekly discussions led by guest speakers at the residential colleges.

Families weekend begins

This weekend, parents will discover what their sons and daughters have actually been up to in college. Families Weekend began yesterday and continues through Sunday, allowing students and parents alike to experience what Rice and Houston have to offer.This year's Families Weekend theme is "Rice Students. Global Citizens.", according to the Office of International Students and Scholars. This theme is especially fitting, as the university has students representing more than 99 countries, Director of Reunion Programs and Special Events Jennifer Harding said. Rice also welcomed more than 900 new students this year, 13 percent of them international.
