Men's track focuses on outdoor season

A few Owls kicked off the men's outdoor track and field season early this past weekend, with a sampling of the members of the men's track and field team competing at both the Texas Southern University Relays in Houston and the Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla. Redshirt sophomore Ugo Nduaguba was named Conference USA Co-Athlete of the Week for his automatic qualifying mark of 15.61 meters in the triple jump at the TSU Relays, good for first place, while freshman Clayton Chaney and sophomore Connor Hayes took second and fourth, respectively, in the decathlon at the Hurricane Invitational.

At A&M, Colwick ups vault again

The Texas A&M Invitational held last Saturday in College Station, Texas, was simply another day at the office for junior Jason Colwick. The pole vaulter set a Rice record for the third consecutive week, vaulting high above the competition to the tune of 5.61 meters, besting last week's mark of 5.60 meters. He was named the Conference USA Male Athlete of the Week for the third straight week, and he topped the meet record for the pole vault for the third straight time as well, this time setting a Gilliam Stadium record. Colwick has also moved up in the national and world rankings, as his vault Saturday was the third best in the nation, 14th in the world and still tops in the NCAA. Colwick's first-place finish contributed 10 points to the Owls' total of 47, which was good enough for fifth place out of 18 teams.

Coming to America

Someone should really consider following Alexander Zinchenko to men's track meets with a boom box. That way they could blare the spooky electronic music that announced Ivan Drago's triumphant entrance into the arena before his bout with Rocky Balboa in Rocky IV. A fog machine wouldn't hurt either. The Brown College freshman, who matriculated at the beginning of the spring semester and had spent all of four weeks in the United States, is quickly establishing himself as a member of the Fantastic Four who comprise Rice men's shot corps. Rounding out the Four are freshman Will Meyers, junior Philip Adam and sophomore Clay Baker, who took first place at the Feb. 16 Leonard Hilton Invitational. However, Zinchenko, a 6-5, 250-lb. behemoth, is the only one who originated from across the pond.

Track posts impressive numbers in Nebraska

To take a line from Aerosmith, the men's track and field team's performance this week was the same old song and dance. Although the team split up for two separate meets, the clear headliner was once again junior pole vaulter Jason Colwick, who vaulted an incredible 5.60 meters at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. on Saturday to break not only the indoor record he set just last week, but also the outdoor record of 5.55 meters he set last spring at the Texas Relays.

Men's XC places third again

The 2008 election was about choosing a new leader for our country. Thankfully, the men's cross country team does not need the Electoral College to let them know who their team leaders are. Rice's strong core of upperclassmen carried the team to a third place finish at the Conference USA Cross Country Championships in Memphis, Tenn., this past Saturday.Senior Aaron Robson finished 11th overall, followed by junior Simon Bucknell, senior Brett Olson, junior Brad Morris and senior Justin Maxwell, for a total of 84 points. The University of Tulsa took the C-USA title with the help of top finisher John Beattie. The University of Texas-El Paso followed in second, despite having only the minimum of five runners on their roster. Head coach Jon Warren (Jones '88) was pleased with the team's overall effort, and said that UTEP and Tulsa simply ran their best races of the season.
