Men's and women's tennis win one, lose one over weekend

For the last time before conference championships, the women's tennis team packed their bags, traveled long hours in a cramped white van and missed out on their friends' shenanigans back at Rice, to head out onto the road for their last away matches of the regular season at Southern Methodist University and the University of North Texas. First, the No. 42 Owls (12-8) took on a tough No. 29 SMU (22-3) squad on a four-game winning streak.

Women dominate Broncos, look to rematch with Buckeyes

While most of Rice's student body was still in their beds last Sunday, recovering from Beer Bike the day before, the No. 44 women's tennis team had to be up and ready to face old rival Western Michigan University. After a bump in their season last week versus Wichita State University (5-8) and No. 33 University of Tulsa (12-5), the team worked on problems that showed the week before in practice and met to revisit team goals in order to focus the team for the rest of the season.

Women's tennis falls short in road competition

After leaving the Pelican State with victories over Louisiana State University and Tulane University to bring their winning streak to five matches, the women's tennis team ran into a tough spot in the nation's heartland, falling to unranked Wichita State University, 4-3, and No. 40 University of Tulsa 5-2. Rice (8-5) played Wichita State (6-6) last Friday in Wichita, Kan. Due to poor weather conditions, the teams were forced to move indoors.

Women earn two wins

Southern Louisiana proved to be the perfect locale for the women's tennis team to start spring break. In matches against Louisiana State University and Tulane University, Rice earned a pair of wins. The 31st-ranked Owls (8-3) have proved unstoppable in the past few weeks. Riding on momentum from the beginning of February, begun by wins over the University of Arizona (8-2) and Texas Tech University (12-1), the Owls have won five straight, including their third straight win over a ranked opponent.

Women knock off first top-20 foe in ten years

The women's tennis team's matches against No. 4 University of California-Los Angeles (9-1) and Pepperdine University (3-5) two weeks ago - matches in which the Owls (5-3) won a total of just two points - seem to have been exactly the kind of wake-up call the team needed. After seeing what it's like to play championship-caliber teams, Rice has been on a roll: the Owls have won their past three matches, two of which came over ranked opponents.

Women find success within friendly confines of Galleria

Judging by the women's tennis team's home victories this weekend, playing indoors is the way to go for the Owls (5-3). After two tough losses in California last week to No. 12 University of California-Los Angeles (7-1) and Pepperdine University (3-3), Rice swept No. 54 University of Arizona and Texas Tech University in what proved to be a bounce-back weekend for a squad looking for traction.

Women's tennis caught California dreaming

Last weekend, the women's tennis team made the long trip to sunny California in hopes of catching a couple of victories, and perhaps some rays as an added bonus. The weekend ended up decently, and the Owls (3-3) got some rays- but no victories were to be found.

Owls split matches with Islanders, Longhorns to begin spring season

The women's tennis team discovered last weekend that the University of Texas is not just talented at football; they know something about serving aces as well. The Owls (1-1) managed to get one point on the board, but their play was not nearly enough to take down the 31st-ranked Longhorns (1-0), who took the weekend match 6-1. Before the team faced off with Texas, however, it began its spring season with a win against Texas A&M Corpus Christi last Wednesday. Due to poor weather conditions, the team could not play its season opener on campus at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium, and, at the last minute, had to move its match to the indoor courts at the Galleria. But the sudden change of venue did not throw the Owls off their game, and they ended up on the winning side of a 6-1 decision.
