The Rice University Police Department arrested and charged a man with attempted burglary of a motor vehicle, criminal trespassing and possession of marijuana on Jan. 12 after a Rice student allegedly saw the suspect attempting to open the doors and trunks of multiple cars near Entrance 23 in North Lot.

Students walking past Coffeehouse's former space will notice that the Willy's Pub offshoot, Little Willy's, is no longer there. The cafe was shut down over the winter break and will soon be replaced by O'Yeah Cafe, which will serve Chinese cuisine.

Rice has achieved top marks once again, ranking sixth and fourth out of 120 Division I-A schools in Graduation Success Rates (GSR) and Federal Graduation Rates (FGR) for student-athletes, respectively, according to a report released by the NCAA a few weeks ago.

Rice hosted its semiannual Town Hall meeting in the Shepherd School of Music's Stude Concert Hall on Wednesday morning. An audience comprised largely of faculty and staff filled the auditorium to listen to President David Leebron make a special presentation in celebration of Rice Day and the university's 99th birthday.

The Baker Institute hosted Reverend Jim Wallis, the president and CEO of Sojourners magazine and a spiritual advisor to President Obama, on Thursday, Sept. 29. In front of an audience of students, faculty, staff and general public, Wallis discussed the roles faith and morals play in politics and democracy.

Caffeine is as much a staple of college life as free T-shirts and ramen noodles. Recently, newcomers like energy drinks and caffeinated alcohol have joined the caffeine offering and created quite a buzz. However, at least here at Rice, they have yet to overturn the popularity of traditional drinks like tea, soda and – above all – coffee.

The Information Technology department released an upgraded mobile web browser for OWL-Space. Now, anyone using a smart mobile device – from iPhones to Blackberries – can access a new version of the site that automatically senses what type of device is being used and then loads the relevant mobile-friendly display.

Houston's Red Bull EmSee, an invitation-only freestyle rap battle, drew in over 800 audience members on Thursday, Sept. 8 for a free night of rapid-fire lyrics and equally amazing competition. Most of the attendees were local rap lovers, but some were oblivious first-timers like myself.

After a summer of deliberation, grant and endowment proposals totaling nearly $3 million from the KTRU radio tower sale have been approved by the Asset Liquidation Funds Appropriation Committee and President David Leebron. The grants that were supported will go into effect this year while the endowments await approval by the Board of Trustees at their upcoming September meeting.

There will be a campus-wide candlelight vigil on Sunday, September 11, at 8 p.m. in the Central Quad commemorating the 10th anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001. This vigil will begin with a reading of Tony Kushner's "A Prayer for New York," include prayers from a variety of religious organizations, and close with the Phils singing the National Anthem.

Around 2,000 students donned their cowboy hats and plaid shirts for Martel College's "Don't Mess with Texas" party last Friday. As the first party of the year, this event is usually well attended, but this year's numbers were much higher than in previous years, Dean of Undergraduates John Hutchinson said.

The university has started implementing some of the recommendations made by the Asset Liquidation Funds Committee last school year. However, the money that has been used on these initiatives has not come directly from the sale itself but rather from university funds allocated toward certain ALFA suggestions.
