Baker Institute creates Center for Energy Studies

The Baker Institute for Public Policy established a Center for Energy Studies that will serve as an umbrella for energy and environmental studies, according to Senior Director for the Center for Energy Studies Kenneth Medlock. The center was created with the intention of engaging more broadly with other energy and environmental initiatives on campus, Medlock said. 







Banners up for Centennial

In the spirit of the upcoming Centennial, the Rice Inner Loop now sports its own walking guide to the history of the university. A hundred Centennial-themed banners recently replaced the owl banners that hung on light posts. The banners display short historical events and can be read in sequential order by following them down the Inner Loop from Tudor Fieldhouse.



On the electron superhighway

Forget cars racing along highways and start thinking electrons. Physics professor Rui-Rui Du and fourth year physics graduate student Ivan Knez have created and recently published on a topological insulator, described as an "electron superhighway". Their research is paving the way to the creation of topological insulator superconductor junctions and, eventually, quantum computers.


Girls on Top: Student artists' classwork on display

Saints. A penguin. A pig. Spot these in the still-lifes created by six female students in ARTS 323, the Intermediate Studio Drawing I class taught by Karin Broker from the Visual and Dramatic Arts Department. The students' artwork opened on display on Oct. 5 and will stay up until Dec. 15 in their art show titled "Girls on Top," which will be held in the Mezzanine Gallery on the top floor of the Rice Media Center.





SA Academics Committee projects near completion

During the course of the school year, the Student Association Academics Committee has been working on projects targeting aspects of student academic life, including a transfer student courses database of previously approved courses, the creation of more minors, improving publicity and resources of pre-professional advising resources, revamping the Esther course evaluation system and creating a Syllabi Archive available during registration. The Academics Committee was also involved in communications with IT regarding the move from Rice E-mail to Gmail.




Dance team takes 7th at first national competition

For the first time since the creation of the Rice Owls Dance Team, the dance team attended a competition to showcase their talent. From Feb. 18-20, six dance team members - Hanszen College junior Gracelyn Tan, Duncan College sophomore Shakiera Mosby, Jones College freshman Monica Barrera, Jones junior Raquel Kahn, Wiess College senior Stephanie Dunlop, and Hanszen senior Ashley Broadus - competed at the National Cheerleading and Dance Championship in Atlanta, Ga. The team placed seventh in the College Open Hip-Hop Division.



RUPD removes unregistered bikes, frees space

Rice University Police Department has been removing unregistered bicycles in an initiative to motivate students to register their bikes. Sixteen bikes had their locks cut and were taken from around Lovett College on Wednesday. Baker College and Will Rice College also had unregistered and abandoned bikes removed earlier this month, and students from McMurtry College and Duncan College received notices earlier this month regarding the removal of unregistered bikes next Friday.
