Hit the books at these fun study places

By Chiara Moretti     11/28/23 11:41pm

Finals season is among us, which is definitely a step up from syllabus week. Looking for places to study is overwhelming, but you can easily get in your groove once you find the ideal spot. Whether you’re looking to study alone or with a group, check out these study spots on and around campus to ensure the best finals experience.

College commons & libraries

Any college commons and library is conducive for both introverts and extroverts. If you want to be around friends and fellow students of your college community, hit the books in your college commons. If you prefer working alone or cannot concentrate in a busy environment, study in your college library. Rarely will you find lots of people working in college libraries, so it’s perfect for getting into the zone.

Campesino Coffee House

If you want to take a break from Rice, look no further than Campesino Coffee House. This off-campus gem is a Latin-American inspired cafe with a beautiful venue and tasty treats. Located only 10 minutes from campus, Campesino is relatively accessible and has affordable prices.

Rayzor Hall

This underrated Rice building provides an excellent study environment, combining its quiet nature with its student mobility. The lobby, located on the first floor, has comfortable seats where you can get your laptop out and ‘git-er-done.’ If you despise loud noises, but also can’t stand it when there is an absence of energy, then Rayzor will provide the best study experience for you.

ShareTea

This well-known boba shop located in Rice Village is perfect for studying due to its relaxed and tranquil nature. The delicious drinks and various card and board games also serve as enjoyable ways to take occasional breaks from studying. Considering its close proximity to Rice, you can easily walk to ShareTea if you’re not physically exhausted by all the studying — and don’t skip on the student discount.

O’Connor Building for Engineering and Science

This new engineering building is an excellent study spot because of its architectural design. Considering the vast layout of the building, you can receive personal space from those next to you. In addition, the modern design of the building will give you a view to admire while you’re frantically studying for a final you have the next day. Whether or not you’re part of the engineering program, O’Connor guarantees a positive study experience.

Fondren Library

We saved the best for last — it’s a library after all. Having six floors, you’ll definitely find the specific environment you are looking for at Fondy. If you want to do some studying but mainly want to interact with your friends and other people, then the first floor is perfect for you. If you want complete silence to the point where you can hear your own blood flowing, then go for the fifth or sixth floors. Lastly, if you’re looking for something in-between, aim for the middle floors.

Jeremy Zucker is no longer a ‘sad-boy troubadour’

Jeremy Zucker’s arms, like most of his body, host a scrapbook of tattoos — a faded clementine peel, his childhood pets (Rusty and Susie), a Pinterest doodle of Sonic the Hedgehog with a bouquet of flowers. His middle finger is etched with a single tooth, hanging off a thin branch wrapping around the rest of his hand.

Tribute band ‘Suede Hedgehog’ talks inspirations, legacies

Last Thursday, the halls of the RMC were graced with smooth melodies and funky grooves courtesy of “Suede Hedgehog,” Rice’s very own tribute band to “Silk Sonic,” a musical duo made up of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak. Although the tiny desk concert only lasted about 20 minutes the atmosphere was electric, and Coffeehouse — their venue — was packed with listeners.
