Commencement 2018: Bloomberg stresses importance of honesty in commencement address

Four years ago, the class of 2018 walked through the Sallyport into the Academic Quad for the first time, hailed by fireworks and cheered on by upperclassmen. Last weekend, they sat in the same quad in caps and gowns as their friends and families looked on expectantly. The cheering classes of upperclassmen who had led them through Orientation Week had graduated, and now, it was their turn to walk out of the Sallyport.

Response to Justin Onwenu: Truly partisan issues should not be framed as “questions of humanity”

In his opinion earlier this week, former Student Association President Justin Onwenu argued that Rice had a duty to "stand tall" and take positions on political issues such as immigration, gun control, and global warming, claiming that these issues defy partisan divides as they are "questions of humanity, not partisan politics."

Yes, everything is political — but some things should not be partisan

All members of our community — faculty, students, and by extension Rice as an institution — have a duty to uphold our institutional values. These values are RICE: responsibility, integrity, community and excellence, which have long been established and are values that must continue to be supported and affirmed. While some have called on Rice to avoid taking sides in all political topics, it is naïve to believe we can operate in a world free of the consequences of intentional silence.

Wayne Graham out at Rice after 2018 season

A legendary tenure is set to come to an end at the end of the baseball season. Baseball head coach Wayne Graham has been informed that his contract will not be renewed next year. Graham has been the head coach at Rice since 1992 and has led the Owls to 23 consecutive NCAA tournaments. He has never had a losing season, though the Owls are currently 16-23-2 this year. Graham said the decision was ultimately out of his control.

Cyclist killed in collision with truck near Rice University main entrance

According to a text alert from Rice University, a bicyclist was killed in an accident with a truck near the intersection of Main Street and Sunset Boulevard this morning. According to Rice University, the victim was the spouse of a member of the Rice community. The Houston Police Department has shut down the intersection and the text alert states members of the Rice community should avoid the area.

​SJP structure changed to avoid conflict of interest following relationship

As of Feb. 20, Director of Student Judicial Programs Lisa DeLaTorre reports directly to Dean of Undergraduates John Hutchinson rather than Associate Dean of Undergraduates Don Ostdiek. According to Hutchinson, the change comes after Ostdiek and DeLaTorre disclosed a romantic relationship to him on Feb. 16.

​CTIS to move to weekdays, take place at residential colleges

Changes to next year’s Critical Thinking in Sexuality workshop include moving the course offerings to weekdays and hosting sessions within residential colleges in response to student feedback, according to Dean of Undergraduates John Hutchinson and Director of Sexual Violence and Title IX Support Allison Vogt.
