On Jan. 23, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for their annual much-anticipated Academy Awards. Like every year, this slate of nominees was full of snubs and surprises; here are some that the Thresher believed were especially notable.
Lions, dragons and K-pop dances, oh my! The Rice Chinese Students Association held its annual Lunar New Year Gala Feb. 1, ringing in the Year of the Snake with performances, food and vibrant cultural festivities.

The Academy Awards revealed their nominations Jan. 23, and to the surprise of many, James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic walked away with eight. Titled “A Complete Unknown,” the film follows Dylan’s meteoric rise in the 1960s folk scene, culminating in his now-famous transition to electric guitars. Despite the nods from the Academy, Mangold’s film delivers a story that is more style than substance, never fully illuminating the genius behind the shades.

Check out these movies, which are some of the best of the fall festival season.

The Pogues are back. This latest season of “Outer Banks” kicked off Oct. 10 with the first half of the fourth season out on Netflix now. Fans of the show don’t have to wait too long: The second half reaches audiences Nov. 7. Stars Jonathan Daviss and Austin North — who play Pope and Topper, respectively — spoke with the Thresher about the North Carolina teenagers’ forthcoming adventures.
“This is me and my band’s first festival, so it’s a big moment for us,” Emei said at her Austin City Limits show Oct. 12. “We’ve never ever done a festival, so it’s going to be awesome.”
