Whitehead rolls to first career tournament victory

(04/01/11 12:00am)

With seven top-10 finishes in the year, including a second place finish against a stacked field at the recent Duck Invitational on Mar. 21- 22, senior Michael Whitehead was bound to break through at some point. That point came on Saturday at the 60th Border Olympics in Laredo, when Whitehead finished with a final-round 62 for his first collegiate victory.

Whitehead finishes fifth at Rice Intercollegiate

(02/25/11 12:00am)

Under sunny skies and with an uncharacteristically calm wind at Westwood Golf Club, the golf team posted their best finish of the season thus far.Coming off a disappointing performance at last week's UTSA Oak Hills Invitational that saw the Owls finish their rounds poorly, Rice looked to bounce back strongly at a tournament they have had success at in the past. Rice took the team title in 2010 at their only home event, while Christopher Brown (Brown '10) was able to take the individual title in windy conditions that kept score high.

Golf falters late after solid start

(02/18/11 12:00am)

Looking to close the second round with a strong finish, the Owls instead squandered their place in the top-half of the leaderboard, falling to a 14th place finished at the UTSA/Oak Hills Invitational in San Antonio. Following a layoff from competition that neared four months, Rice stepped up to the tee on Monday morning and put forth a solid round. Led by senior Michael Whitehead, the team's strongest performer throughout the fall, the Owls shot a cumulative 293. The round left them in a tie for eighth in the 17- team field. Freshman Chris Contreras and sophomore Brock Wilson shot matching 73s to head the Owls' strong effort. Contreras felt that the course was ripe for scoring in the first round.

Golf plagued by late-round scores; Whitehead shines

(10/22/10 12:00am)

While finishing strong is a mantra echoed by any and all mentors in the sports world, the Owls failed to heed this piece of advice last weekend in Baton Rouge, La. Looking for a solid performance at the David Toms Intercollegiate to generate some momentum into their season's winter break, the golf team was unable to build on a solid first round and finished in last place. With their two hardest events of the fall marking the end of the first half of their season and the beginning of their midseason break, the Owls knew their performance in Durham, N.C. at the Rod Myers Intercollegiate and the Toms Intercollegiate would be crucial. Despite senior Michael Whitehead's second-place finish at the Rod Myers Intercollegiate, hosted by Duke University, the team finished in 11th place, making this past week's event, hosted by Louisiana State University, that much more important.

Golf grabs sixth place in Louisiana; looks to N.C. next

(10/08/10 12:00am)

Needing a solid final-round performance, senior Michael Whitehead delivered for the Owls, moving the golf team into a tie for sixth place on Tuesday at the Squire Creek Intercollegiate hosted by Louisiana Tech University in Choudrant, La. The Sugar Land native started off with an opening-round 66, the second-lowest round recorded by any Rice golfer since the mid-1980s.Rice shot a cumulative three-round score of 912 to tie the team with Sam Houston State University. The Owls' final-round score of 304 was the third lowest during Tuesday's third round of play and moved Rice out of a tie for eighth into sixth.

Golf can't hold up strong start in Arlington, finishes in eighth place

(09/24/10 12:00am)

Despite posting the best one-round score of any team during the Head Coach Drew Scott (Wiess '98) era, the golf team fell short of converting that round into a top finish, posting an eighth-place finish at the UTA/Waterchase Invitational in Arlington, Texas on Tuesday. Senior Michael Whitehead led Rice throughout three rounds en route to a tie for fifth place. Whitehead, who qualified for the prestigious U.S. Amateur Tournament over the summer, finished at par or under all three rounds, and his cumulative score of 213 left him only four shots back of the event's individual champion, Derek Plucienski of the University of North Texas.

Golf has rough start, now travels to Arlington

(09/17/10 12:00am)

Looking to get off to a fast start for their fall campaign, the golf team stumbled to a 13th-place finish at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate, hosted last Monday and Tuesday by the University of Southern Mississippi at the Hattiesburg Country Club in Hattiesburg, Miss. Despite their performance, Rice's improvement throughout the event gave cause for optimism. This year's version of the golf team features two freshmen hoping to replace some of the production of last year's seniors, Christopher Brown (Baker '10) and Michael Buttacavoli (Martel '10), and Jade Scott, last year's Conference USA freshman of the year, who transferred to Texas A&M University following the spring season. Head Coach Drew Scott knew replacing the talent would be a difficult task, and the first round of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate only confirmed his suspicions.

Volleyball rolls over Red Raiders and Roadrunners

(09/03/10 12:00am)

While most volleyball teams would be happy with the results Rice posted last weekend, this year's team heads out west this coming weekend with a bitter taste in their mouth. Hosting the first of two Rice Invitational tournaments, the Owls got off to a hot start against Texas Tech University on Friday evening at Tudor Fieldhouse. Sophomore Laurie McNamara, a transfer from Villanova University, paced Rice's attack in the first set with five kills, while senior setter Meredith Schamun recorded 14 assists, allowing Rice to take the first set 25-23. McNamara would finish with 10 kills, one of three Owls to record double-digit kills.

Rice Volleyball 2010

(08/27/10 12:00am)

While the Owls were certainly displeased with the ending to their 2009 season, a look back at last year's accomplishments reveals a successful season. Rice qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year, while also winning the Conference USA Tournament held at Tudor Fieldhouse last November. The Owls understand, however, that the success of last season means little if they do not continue to take steps forward. Despite last year's achievements, Head Coach Genny Volpe believes that this year's squad can build upon 2009.

Golf takes second place in C-USA Tournament

(05/17/10 12:00am)

With its season on the brink, the golf team had just one tournament left to keep their season going. But despite the pressure, Christopher Brown (Brown '10) and the Owls came up big, taking a second-place finish to clinch a berth in the NCAA Regionals in College Station on May 20- 22. The Rice golf team has had a successful season, winning two team titles and two individual titles prior to the Conference USA Championship in Sorrento, Fla.

Golf fails to take tournament title after subpar first day

(04/16/10 12:00am)

The golf team entered the Jim West Intercollegiate on April 12 looking to lock up an NCAA appearance with their third team title of the season. Instead, they posted a third-place finish, leaving themselves with work to do in the upcoming Conference USA Tournament. After what could only be described as one of the most successful season starts in recent Rice golf history, which saw the squad score two team titles and post six out of seven top-five finishes early this season, the Owls have struggled to the finish line. What at once seemed like an almost-certain NCAA berth is no longer such a sure thing.

Online only: Golf on the bubble for postseason after 10th-place finish

(04/09/10 12:00am)

Facing stiff competition, the golf team could not crack the top half of the leader board at the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate, leaving the team on the bubble for postseason play.Looking for a strong performance at the Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Mississippi, the Owls stumbled out of the gate with a first-round score of 298, placing them in the back half of the 15-team field immediately. Senior Christopher Brown led Rice with a two under-par 70. However, no other golfers for Rice posted scores of par or under, and the team entered the second round of play in 11th place.
