In the early hours of the morning on July 4, flood waters rapidly rose the Guadalupe River to 30 feet above its normal height. One of the few gauges on the river failed. Young girls sleeping in the cabins of Camp Mystic on the banks of the river had no phones to receive the flood warnings.

In May 2023, a Berkeley Law School sticker adorned Lavina Kalwani’s laptop; she had been accepted and was set to attend in the fall. Four months later, Kalwani found herself on a completely different path: weaving together entrepreneurship and sustainable fashion while pursuing her Master of Business Administration at Rice.

The Pogues are back. This latest season of “Outer Banks” kicked off Oct. 10 with the first half of the fourth season out on Netflix now. The morning after a terrible storm, inspiration struck Karyn Olivier on her commute to work. In a North Philadelphia neighborhood she had driven through countless times before, a huge swath of vines and ivy had been peeled off of a concrete wall by the rain and wind, crumpling forlornly over an adjacent fence. Olivier stopped her car and took a photograph.
