When Robyn and Greg West enrolled their sons in T-ball, they said they saw baseball as a way to keep the boys out of trouble. Eighteen years later, brothers Graiden and Landon West compete at the Division I level for Rice’s baseball team.

Illuminated by the Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza’s red and yellow lights, Sid Richardson College defeated Baker College in the intramural coed flag football championship April 3. Sid Rich took home the title for the second year in a row, outscoring Baker 19-7 in the final after an undefeated season.

Mia Nagle, a junior at Baker College, competes for Rice’s swim team in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley. She is double-majoring in business and sport management and minoring in sociology.

As the basketball season begins, fans may find the student section filled with new chants, signs and a larger-than-life foam cutout of Shrek’s face. Megan Vila, assistant director of marketing for Rice Athletics, has developed new props to raise school spirit and increase the energy at games, she said.

As the Powderpuff regular season comes to a close, six colleges vie for the coveted championship scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 23. With the most players of any intramural sport, Powderpuff is not taken lightly. Each team practices weekly, coached by members of the Rice community, to prepare for weekend games. Representatives from each team shared their regular season highlights and memories in preparation for the postseason.

Freshman golfer Daniel Zou tied for first place at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic Oct. 1 in only his third tournament as an Owl. Though Sam Houston State University took home the team trophy, Zou and Rice junior Lukas Boandl tied with Louisiana State University’s Noah McWilliams for the individual first place title with a three-day score of 12 under par.

Rice volleyball opened last week with two wins against Tulane University and the University of Texas at San Antonio, defending their projected first-place American Athletic Conference finish. The AAC’s Coaches Poll picked the team to finish atop the conference during their preseason, in their second year in the AAC.

The Rice men’s golf team teed off their season with a historic win last week. Lukas Boandl placed first at the Argent Financial Classic in Louisiana, becoming the fourth golfer in Rice history to complete a tournament at least -10 and the first to receive medalist honors in any tournament since 2019. The Owls tied for third place at +6, three strokes behind the lead.
