Since moving to Houston to teach civil and environmental engineering at Rice, Bezawit Getachew said she’s been enjoying the city’s parks. Virtual teaching, she said, has been going smoother than she expected.
Margarita Castromán Soto moved from New York City to Rice to join the English department, where she specializes in African American literature. Despite having to maintain physical distance from them, Castromán Soto said she feels very supported by her colleagues.
Yimo Han is a materials science and nanoengineering professor who moved to Houston from Princeton, New Jersey in May 2020. She said that although she anticipates new challenges will arise, she can’t wait until she can safely move from her virtual classroom to a real one.
James Doss-Gollin started virtually teaching civil and environmental engineering at Rice on Jan. 1. He said he’s been making the most of Houston’s food scene since moving to the city from New Haven, Connecticut.
