Candidate-provided campaign statement

Hi everyone! My name is Lauren and I am excited to be running for SA Treasurer. As an aspiring accountant who is currently serving as SA Deputy Treasurer, and a member of the Blanket Tax and SAPP Fund Committees, I've gained the experience necessary to take on the role of Treasurer. If elected, I want to focus on two main priorities - inclusivity and transparency. In order to promote cultural and socioeconomic inclusivity, I would like to designate a certain portion of the blanket tax and SAPP funds to be specifically used to support cultural clubs and subsidize events for low-income members of the Rice family. Through this designation of funds, more events promoting diversity can be organized, and low-income students can participate more in paid events on campus. With regard to transparency, I would like to make the requirements for SAPP and blanket tax funding more widely known and increase student input within those committees. Many SAPP applications are denied or not funded in full because of lack of knowledge of requirements. Similarly, when a club does not have representation within the committee, it is hard to know all of the aspects of a funding request by just looking at an application. To ensure fair funding, and to help applicants get the funds they need, I will host office hours so students can have their applications reviewed before submitting and ask questions regarding funding requirements.
