Lovett gas scare puts college safety into question

By Staff Editorial     2/22/12 6:00pm

Lovett College was filled with the smell of gasoline last week, forcing students to evacuate out of both fear and, in some cases, watering eyes (see story, pg. 1). The open grate in front of the college that connects directly to the buildings' ventilation system shed light on what is clearly a safety hazard.

The idea that anyone could access the ventilation system so easily is, of course, scary. Now that the vent has been discovered, we feel that the university should look into the safety of its accessibility. A similar review should occur at other colleges around campus to ensure that there are not other major design defects that could endanger those facilities.
