Food rep changes will lead to better communication

By Staff Editorial     2/22/12 6:00pm

The Thresher commends the implementation of a standardized process for establishing food representatives in each college. Currently, the colleges have varying numbers of food reps who often have different jobs. Now, each college will have one food rep who is an elected cabinet member (see story, pg. 1).

We feel this is a more efficient way for students to communicate with the servery. However, the institution of this new process does not ensure that the system will be fixed. Newly elected food reps will need to go above and beyond to communicate with their constituents about servery issues. The Thresher encourages food reps to use social media, centrally located dry-erase boards or any other means that allows students to voice their food related opinions.

Despite what H&D's new plan may claim, meal swipes were already unlimited

Imagine an on-campus student moves into their dorm the Saturday before classes start and stays three full days after the latest possible final exam. Imagine this student eats three meals a day, every day, at a servery. Imagine this student never orders Uber Eats, never goes to a restaurant, never gets a meal from a college or club event and never sle eps through breakfast. Imagine this student never travels during weekends, mid-semester recess or Thanksgiving break. Over the course of the semester, this student would eat 354 meals.

This moment may be unprecedented — Rice falling short is not

In many ways, the current landscape of American higher education is unprecedented. Sweeping cuts to federal research funding, overt government efforts to control academic departments and censor campus protests and arbitrary arrests and visa revocations have rightly been criticized as ushering in the latest iteration of fascism.
