Limelight: Jarvis Sam, Music World Intern, Beyonce fan

Few can attest to learning the entirety of Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" dance in less than seven minutes, or only two viewings of the YouTube sensation. Among this small denomination is Jarvis Sam, Hanszen College junior and employee at Music World Entertainment, a local record label in Houston representing Destiny's Child and Beyonce Knowles.

Sam has been working at Music World Entertainment since May 2011 with a multitude of responsibilities. He acts as production assistant to project manager Krystal Studavent and assists in shooting artist music videos and photo shoots as well as researching for marketing plans presented to CEO Mathew Knowles.

Music World Entertainment states on its official website, "behind the scenes of Beyonce's world tour, Solange's video shoot, and Trin-i-tee 5:7's recording session lives a team of marketers, creatives, business developers and a host of others that makes this all possible. Music World Entertainment looks for the best business talent to support our musical talent and bring their music to life."

Within a specific sector of the record label, Music World Properties, Sam assists in the organization of parties at the House of Dereon, a media center and event venue owned by Beyonce herself. From weddings and bar and bat mitzvahs to Budweiser and Coca-Cola company parties, he incurs a wide range of responsibilities including coordination of entertainment and ensuring that parties run smoothly.

Yet another subdivision of the company, Music World Studios, also benefits from Sam's labors. Working with audio engineers to help facilitate artist productions, Sam now has a greater understanding of the use of audio engineering technologies to go from audio recording in the studio to CDs in store shelves.

Sam hopes to soon begin working in music licensing, or dealing with external corporations such as ABC, NBC and the Disney Channel, that would like to utilize songs within the Music World Entertainment catalogue, including all songs belonging to Destiny's Child and all songs prior to those in Beyonce's most recent album, 4.

Though Sam's respect and passion for Beyonce are great, his desire to begin working at Music World Entertainment has done more than fuel a celebrity crush. He now is certain in his decision to become a sports and entertainment lawyer. Perhaps most pivotal in the execution of these plans is Rice and the opportunities it provides.

"Rice has provided me with such an amazing education just thus far. It gives me a lot of broad ability to engage in teachers that are experts in given fields and is by no means constricting with courses. In fact, I got three credit hours for interning at Music World Entertainment this summer," Sam said. "Rice culture is so friendly, supportive and open. I know that if I would have gone to any other university I would not have encountered this field, my passion."

This moment may be unprecedented — Rice falling short is not

In many ways, the current landscape of American higher education is unprecedented. Sweeping cuts to federal research funding, overt government efforts to control academic departments and censor campus protests and arbitrary arrests and visa revocations have rightly been criticized as ushering in the latest iteration of fascism.
