Trends on Campus: Sheer Perfection in the Houston Heat

By Brittney Xu     8/20/11 7:00pm

As anyone with extra-sensory organs can tell you, lately, it has been very hot in Houston. With temperatures inching into the triple digits, how do Rice students still manage to look presentable when meeting classmates and professors? (Although ladies, if the heat gets too much to bear, remember that it is not illegal to be topless in Texas). Barring going around half-nude, this week's Trends on Campus column will show you an easy-breezy way to dress for these dog days in August.

Will Rice College freshman Megan Shepard (pictured to the right) is already proving herself trendy and adaptable. Normally, layering seems counter-intuitive in summer, but Megan's see-through top over a tank is sheer perfection. The printed top is more interesting and less revealing than just a tank top, but it also doesn't add much weight or heat.

Besides, think of the breeze you'll produce when you walk around in this kind of shirt, as you flutter to and from class, like an eye-catching, humanized version of the Glasswinged butterfly.

Just add any color of shorts, a cute pair of wedges or flip-flops, and you are ready for your day. To the right are some tips that can help you achieve this effortless heat-buster.

The versatility and simplicity of her outfit is the fact that it looks put together, but doesn't require any thinking or rushing in the morning. And with new classes and new people, it's best to save your energy for the exciting weeks ahead.

Review: “Balloonerism” is a graceful tribute to Mac Miller’s legacy

Mac Miller’s “Balloonerism” is a delicate balancing act — a posthumous release that feels deeply personal yet walks the fine line between honoring an artist's legacy and commodifying it. Unlike other releases from late artists, which can feel like haphazard collections of half-finished demos (The Party Never Ends by Juice WRLD comes to mind), “Balloonerism” is a cohesive, almost ethereal work.

Review: “The Book of Mormon” involves no reading

“The Book of Mormon”, a flashy musical that is not at all biblically accurate, came to the Houston Hobby Center January 7-12. The musical makes a mockery of the typical mission work expected from Mormons, covering everything from their racism, attempts at forced conversion and inner-religious conflicts, all while tap-dancing and singing away.

Review: “Look Back” is short but powerful

“Look Back” is one of the best films of 2024. Inspired by the tragic 2019 Kyoto Animation arson attack, Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of “Chainsaw Man,” crafts a deeply moving tribute that transforms real-life sorrow into a story of resilience and connection.
