Sports notebook: Freshman brings home tennis title, Women's doubles takes second place
Freshman brings home tennis title
Freshman Phillipp Jan Seifert cruised to a victory over unattached Alex Grubbs to advance to the finals of the men's open singles B bracket in the HEB Baylor Invitational held in Waco, Texas on Sunday. While the silver medal was already guaranteed for Seifert, he did not even need one serve to capture the gold as his scheduled opponent, Lucas Lopasso of Auburn University, withdrew from the final match as a result of an injury sustained during his semifinal victory over Daniel Brown of Texas A&M University. Earlier in the tournament, fellow freshman Peter Frank advanced to the round of 16 in the men's open singles A draw. Sophomore Harry Fowler also picked up a straight-set victory over the University of Maryland's Michiel Doorneball but fell to the No. 3 seed Jeff Dadamo of Texas A&M before he could advance further.
In the open singles B bracket, sophomores Jonathan Chang and junior Andy Wang also advanced past the first round with Seifert before losing in the next round.
The Owls host the Rice Fall Invitational at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium starting today through Sunday. Rice will take on the University of Texas, Louisiana State University and Southern Methodist University, all of which are perennially ranked among the top teams in the nation.

Women's doubles takes second place
Freshman Kimberly Anicete and senior Varsha Shiva-Shankar failed to bring home the women's doubles title at the Islanders Open Championship hosted by Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in Corpus Christi, Texas, losing to sisters Bryony and Giorgia Hunter of the University of Houston. Anicete and Shiva-Shankar advanced to the finals after beating the University of Houston's Maja Kazimieruk and Joanna Kacprzyk three days earlier. The final match was played in Houston as a result of inclement weather in Corpus Christi. The Owls will head west to Pacific Palisades, Calif. to take part in the ITA All-American Championships this weekend.
