Welcome to the Thresher's A&E section
New students, you are holding in your hands the very first issue of the Rice Thresher to be published this year. And, if you're reading this, that means you've turned to the best section in the entire paper: the Arts & Entertainment section, edited by yours truly.Every week, you'll find A&E packed with the latest movie reviews, college theater and show reviews, articles about awesome restaurant and dessert joints, the occasional map of where to find good food close to campus - like this week's late-night food map - and a weekly list of nifty events that are happening outside the hedges (The Weekly Scene). Occasionally we also run semi-regular columns on music or movies or topics that wouldn't normally fit in other sections.
Ultimately, where the news and sports sections deal with events pertaining to Rice, A&E is your connection to Houston and things happening outside the hedges.
How can you get in on all this hot, sweaty action, you ask? Believe it or not, it's actually really easy. I'm always looking for new writers and reviewers to write content for A&E, and getting started is as simple as sending an e-mail to thresher-arts@rice.edu. Better yet, we pay you real money to write for the Thresher. As in cold, hard cash. Not to mention your name goes in the paper and your articles get read every week by more than 6,000 people who pick up a Thresher in and around campus and by the countless visitors to our website at www.ricethresher.org. And no previous journalistic experience is necessary. In fact, when I started at the Thresher as a wee sophomore, I had absolutely zero experience working for a paper.
So even if you just have a fleeting interest in possibly writing for the Thresher about cool movies or food or video games, shoot me an e-mail at thresher-arts@rice.edu and I'll get you started with additional information. I'm also searching for someone to replace me as section editor soon, since I'm graduating in May. If you'd be interested in that, send me an email as well.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you all and also providing some quality reading for everyone in the coming school year.
Joe Dwyer is a Wiess College senior and Thresher A&E editor.

Founder’s Court goes alt-rock as bôa kicks off U.S. tour at Rice
Founder’s Court morphed into a festival ground Friday night as British alt-rock band bôa launched the U.S. leg of their “Whiplash” tour. The group headlined the third annual Moody X-Fest before what organizers estimate was “a little bit over 2,000 students” — the largest turnout in the event’s three-year history.
Rice launches alternative funding program amid federal research cuts
Rice is launching the Bridge Funding Program for faculty whose federal funding for research projects has been reduced or removed. The program was announced via the Provost’s newsletter April 24.
This moment may be unprecedented — Rice falling short is not
In many ways, the current landscape of American higher education is unprecedented. Sweeping cuts to federal research funding, overt government efforts to control academic departments and censor campus protests and arbitrary arrests and visa revocations have rightly been criticized as ushering in the latest iteration of fascism.
