Online only: Student Association minutes from Nov. 2 meeting
The following were noted at the most recent meeting of the Student Association Nov. 2.SA President Patrick McAnaney announced that the Master Plan Committee, which oversees the university's 50-year plan, met last Wednesday. McAnaney, a Brown College senior, said the committee plans to conduct a university-wide survey soon. At the next SA meeting, the committee will present their plans.
Internal Vice President Selim Sheikh announced that the Rice Clubs Central Web site,atclubs.rice.edu,can now be used to request a club online.
Secretary Philip Tarpley announced that the the SA'sWho Drew?T-shirt competition has been narrowed to three finalists. The finalists have two weeks to tweak their designs, and on Monday, Nov. 16, the student body will vote to choose the winning design.
Director of Elections Ronnie Ren announced that nominations for Homecoming King and Queen can be submitted toricehc@gmail.com. They will be accepted through today.
Academics Committee Chairs Varun Rajan, Rory Hatch and Ly Hoang announced that they have met with Registrar David Tenney and have created a list of courses to be added as distribution courses. The list will be forwarded to the deans for approval.
Rajan, a Brown senior, said he wants to implement a system to increase the efficiency of academic advising and recommendation-letter writing by designating faculty members to have access to relevant information, such as a student's transcript and resumé, on Owlspace.
Hatch, a Wiess College junior, said he is looking into expanding the business minor to a business major.
McAnaney presided over debate on two bylaw amendments: The first was to formally create the Senior Committee; the second, to amend the SA's annual awards instructions so students can be given an award for contribution in one field rather than for multiple fields.
Parliamentarian Jonathan Stewart said he wants to reexamine how the SA conducts club approvals. The ideas of having SA meetings designated for doing club approvals only and whether to have the presenters leave the room while the senate votes on the club status were some of the ideas that were proposed.
Wiess College President Alex Bonnel announced that Salsa Night is tomorrow from 10 p.m.-2 a.m. in the Wiess Commons. There will be margaritas for those of age.
Sheikh, a Martel College junior, urged people to seeRENTat Martel this today or tomorrow.
The SA will meet Monday, Nov. 9 at 9 p.m. in the Farnsworth Pavilion.

In many ways, the current landscape of American higher education is unprecedented. Sweeping cuts to federal research funding, overt government efforts to control academic departments and censor campus protests and arbitrary arrests and visa revocations have rightly been criticized as ushering in the latest iteration of fascism.
