New Brown RAs chosen
After months of deliberation, Brown College selected Jenny and Joe Rozelle (Hanszen '00 and Wiess '99) as its Resident Associates for the 2009-'10 academic year, Brown College senior and Head of the RA Search Committee Larissa Charnsangavej said. "This is something we have talked about for a long time," Jenny Rozelle said. "We had long decided that if we moved back to Houston, we would want to be RAs."
Joe Rozelle said because they were from Hanszen and Wiess colleges, he and Jenny did not want to be at the other's college. They applied to be Brown RAs because of their involvement in everyday Brown life as Brown Associates.
The Rozelles said they decided to be Brown Associates due to encouragement from previous Brown Masters John and Paula Hutchinson. Their interest in the RA position was sparked at the Spring Associates Night after a conversation with senior John Land, Brown's president last year.
Joe Rozelle said being around vibrant Brown students made them realize that they could be a part of the college everyday as opposed to only on Associates' Nights.
The Rozelles said since they came back as alumni, they have become even more aware about the large number of student activities and student involvement.
"There's a big sense of community [here] and people are always involved," Jenny Rozelle said.
Joe Rozelle said he was impressed by Brown's organization.
"It says a lot about the caliber of students," Joe Rozelle said. "[Brown is] run well by the students, college coordinator, associates and masters."
Brown senior Jasdeep Mangat said he is sad to be graduating before the Rozelles become RAs.
"Jenny and Joe are going to be amazing RAs," Mangat said. "They are both so down-to-earth and open-minded."
Brown president Jackie Ammons said she is looking forward to working with the Rozelles.
"I am excited about Jenny and Joe [because] they balance each other out and interact well with each other," Ammons, a Brown College junior, said.
Brown Master Laura Cox said the Rozelles' capacity to be excellent RAs was evident from the start.
"[They] had amazing chemistry with the RA Committee," Cox said.
The Rozelles said they were not very involved with Brown when they were at Rice since they were mostly concerned with their respective colleges. However, that did not mean that Brown went unnoticed during their undergraduate years, especially around this time of the year.
"I knew Brown as one of those colleges that was better than Wiess at Beer Bike," Joe Rozelle said.

This moment may be unprecedented — Rice falling short is not
In many ways, the current landscape of American higher education is unprecedented. Sweeping cuts to federal research funding, overt government efforts to control academic departments and censor campus protests and arbitrary arrests and visa revocations have rightly been criticized as ushering in the latest iteration of fascism.
