“After NYC banned gatherings of more than 500 people at the time of the CMA convention, the annual ‘Photo Shoot-out’ challenged its photographers to document the ‘only story that mattered’ as the pandemic struck. March 13 was a rainy, frightening day for most New Yorkers. That afternoon, I took this photo on Broadway. People were masked. And alone. In the most populous city in the country. Rice University Emergency Medical Services is a state-sanctioned EMS agency, and undergraduate students work for the organization on a volunteer basis.
