Debate team wins big again

Rice's speech and debate team sure can talk the talk. According to Forensics Director David Worth, Rice qualified in 26 speech and eight debate events for nationals this year.

Engineer week celebrated

This week, Rice University joined universities all over the country in participating in National Engineers Week, a week dedicated to celebrating accomplishments in engineering fields. National Engineers Week also aims to get more students interested in careers in engineering. Presented at Rice by Dean of Engineering Ned Thomas and Rice Engineering Alumni, the weeklong event offered panels, study breaks and a student design competition.

A revolution is underway at Rice: a food revolution, that is. In an effort to raise awareness about food and farming, a group of students assembled in the academic quadrangle last Friday during lunch.

UCourt changes approved

Justice will soon be served differently in the student body. Two University Court constitutional amendments passed by an overwhelming majority after the first round of Student Association General Elections ended last week.

VISION students see Rice

Prospective students from around the country entered the hedges and sampled Rice University life from Sunday to Tuesday, when Rice hosted 221 minority applicants on campus for its annual VISION program.

Students design portable health-care clinic

Rice students created a portable health-care structure that can fit into a backpack. This proposed structure, dubbed the "Accordion Clinic," won first prize at the School of Architecture's third semiannual spring charrette. The creators are now working toward designing a prototype for use in the field.

SA reconsiders LPAPs

The Lifetime Physical Activity Program graduation requirement may soon be changing. In response to student concerns about wait-listing and difficulties registering for LPAP classes, the Student Association is evaluating the current LPAP requirement and considering changes to improve the program.

Student email set to switch to Gmail

More than a year after Rice and Google began conversations about a potential switch from Rice Webmail to Gmail, the university signed an official contract with Google on Feb. 1 allowing student email accounts hosted by Google. The switch was approved by the Student Association Monday and will be implemented over the summer.
