Stop saying the r-word: Sincerely, someone on the spectrum

(01/22/20 4:00am)

One evening last semester, I sat down at a table with the most familiar faces in my college commons for dinner. We had a lot of scattered conversations about classes, the food and, for some, the past weekend’s late-night escapades. It was during the discussion of this final topic that I heard that word: “Retarded.” It was used in the context of describing the unwise action of a person, maybe or maybe not involving alcohol. Something relatively casual. I didn’t remember the action as much as the word. No one else on the table really noticed. I myself didn’t speak up due to being afraid of possible ridicule and just being in shock. I had hoped that this encounter, along with other encounters that I’ve had the chance to overhear or straight up hear, would not occur on this campus. However, as these occurrences are appearing more frequently, it might as well be me to address it.

Spotify and Horrify: 10 songs that are actually scary

(10/31/18 5:17am)

It’s that time of year again. People are wasting quality pumpkin goop to carve a bunch of topological circles instead of making pumpkin spice coffee, eating candy corn and pretending it’s actually good and wearing costumes at nighttime — from the innocent kid dressing in a cute costume to the participant of Baker 13 dressing in an even cuter no-costume. It’s officially #spookyszn.

Success without happiness: A eulogy for Mac Miller

(09/19/18 7:42am)

I was strolling back to my room from my mechanics lab session in Herzstein Hall, my final class of the week, as my ever-expanding list of commitments weighed heavily on my mind. Around the time I was on the sidewalk bound for my room, I heard a strange song selection reverberating through the entire campus from Sid 7th: “Self Care” by Mac Miller. I listened to the song bouncing off of Baker and pondered to myself, “Why are they playing this, of all songs?” While it’s a great song, I didn’t think it fit the mood of the environment. It’s a song more suited to private listening. It’s best heard as if he were in conversation with you, laying out his pain so you can connect.
