As a result of university-wide budget cuts, masters and doctoral degrees in French studies will no longer be offered for incoming graduate students, effective next semester. The decision was made last semester by Provost Eugene Levy. With this decision, the University of Texas-Austin will be the only university in Texas to still have doctoral program in French studies. Additionally, the end of the French studies masters and doctoral programs marks the end of the only remaining graduate foreign language programs at Rice. Graduate students in all departments are free to take undergraduate language classes, however.

After narrowing down its search for new master candidates, McMurtry College is now looking for a Resident Associate to join its growing community. The candidate selected will join the soon-to-be-determined masters and Lisa Balabanlilar, McMurtry's current Head Resident Fellow, in providing leadership for McMurtry.

In a ceremony last Thursday in the Kyle Morrow Reading Room of Fondren Library, South Korean Consul General of the city of Houston Yun-soo Cho presented the library with a set of Korean dictionaries and encyclopedias that will soon be available to students as part of the reference section.Howard R. Hughes Provost Eugene Levy, Vice Provost and University Librarian Sara Lowman and Director of the Chao Center for Asian Studies Tani Barlow accepted the gift. These dictionaries will fill a gap in the library's collection, Cho said about his first visit to Houston and the Fondren Library, because Fondren has few South Korean-published reference books.

At the end of this year, Lovett College will say goodbye to a familiar face and an ingrained member of its community. After two years of serving as resident associate, Renee Laverdiere will resign from her position at the end of the spring semester. As a graduate student pursuing her Ph.D in mathematics, Laverdiere said she made the decision due to the increased demands of her studies. Laverdiere, who started working toward her Ph.D in 2008, is focusing on the grafting map of Teichmüller space. In addition to continuing her commitment to independent research, Laverdiere has begun teaching mathematics classes at Rice, leaving less time and mental energy to devote to the college, she said.
