Not Your Average Joe: Athletic Director Joe Karlgaard hopes for big payoff from four-point athletics initiative

When he came to Rice University in the summer of 2013, Athletic Director Joe Karlgaard knew the limitations he had to work with. Having worked in the athletic departments at Stanford University and Oberlin College, Karlgaard knows what it takes to run an athletic department at a school that values academics as its first priority.









Graduate student transfer makes presence felt on team

This season, the Rice University men’s basketball team gained an unconventional new guard. Graduate student Van Green is eligible to play for the Owls for the 2014-15 season because of an untimely end to his undergraduate basketball career at Columbia University. Due to an injury, Green was unable to play for the Lions during his junior and senior years at Columbia. According to NCAA rules, Green is still eligible to compete in a final season.     






Attend the Homecoming football game

Rice University is hosting its annual homecoming football game this Saturday, Nov. 8. The team is competing for its sixth win of the season, which will essentially guarantee a spot in a bowl game for the third-straight season and the fifth time in the last 40 years. Additionally, Rice is currently riding a five-game winning streak, has won 11 of their last 12 home games and looks as if they could be contenders for the Conference USA title.







Football prepares for Notre Dame

When the Rice University football team takes the field against the 17th-ranked University of Notre Dame this Saturday, Aug. 30, they will be the defending conference champions for the first time since 1956. Following their third ten-win season in school history, the Owls will strive for their third consecutive bowl game and try to repeat as conference champions, something that has never been achieved in school history.
