(09/06/13 12:00am)

For the first time in 18 years, the Owls visited an old Southwestern Conference foe when they traveled to College Station to play Texas A&M University on Saturday. With Texas A&M redshirt sophomore quarterback Johnny Manziel suspended for the first half of the game for breaking NCAA rules, the Owls soared out of the gate to take a 14-7 lead after the first quarter.

Football has chance for memorable year

(09/06/13 12:00am)

As two seniors who have followed Rice University athletics over the past few years, we have gone through some surprises and disappointments. We have witnessed volleyball's huge upset to clinch the conference title at home in 2009 and women's tennis's impressive winning streak that handed it the conference title last season. We saw both women's soccer and swimming become premier teams in the conference, securing their first conference championships in their short histories. On the other hand, there have been times when seasons have ended abruptly. Baseball last year was on the cusp of going back to the College

(03/22/13 12:00am)

The Owls men's tennis team knew it was do or die heading into the 55th Rice Invitational, and they answered with three wins against Radford University, Oregon University and Texas A&M University, all ranked opponents. Men's Tennis prepares for TCU match up

(02/15/13 12:00am)

The treading gets tougher for the Owls as they try to break out of their recent slide. Last Thursday, the Owls fell to a rolling Texas A&M University team that cruised in and took the 6-1 result. Even with the negative result, Head Coach Efe Ustundag took some positives from the match saying the team now knows the level they need to play at to beat those elite teams.

Men's tennis wins big

(02/01/13 12:00am)

After a rough start to the year with heartbreaking losses to Texas Tech University and Mississippi State University, the Owls were back on the court last Sunday at Jake Hess Stadium looking to even out their win-loss streak. Playing Lamar University and the University of Texas, Pan American, did the job, and the Owls thrashed both teams 7-0. With the victories, Rice is back at .500 with a 2-2 record. More notably, these were the first two victories for Head Coach Efe Ustundag. Ustundag said he did not think about the first win until he talked to reporters after the fact.

Men's Tennis falls to Memphis in semis of conference tournament

(05/23/12 12:00am)

The men's tennis season was not a smooth drive down Main Street for the Owls. Left and right, there were bumps and bruises, as the team enjoyed some success with a seven game winning streak in late March, but also experienced major heartbreak with the loss to the University of Texas at San Antonio at home in February. In the end, the bruises left too many scars on the Owls resume and they failed to make the NCAA tournament for the first time in several years.

Rice coaches demonstrate athletic power

(04/20/12 12:00am)

With Rice University's esteemed academic tradition, when you think of award winners you think of Nobel Prize winners, award-winning researchers and top scholars. As a student or alumnus, you never expect to hear much about above and beyond athletic performance. It is Rice's academics on which people focus, not athletics. However, over the past two months, Owls fans, whether young children or elderly alumni, might have just witnessed something that they might never see again in their lifetimes.

Men's Tennis still lives on tournament bubble

(04/13/12 12:00am)

The countdown to the NCAA tournament is on, and the Owls know that they do not have much room for error. Rice left the court this weekend with mixed results as they easily defeated Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi 6-1 on Friday afternoon but fumbled a momentous chance to boost their NCAA tournament chances as they fell to the University of Oklahoma 6-1 early Sunday afternoon.

However, lady luck was not on their side Wednesday as they got swept in College Station, TX by Texas A&M University, 7-0. Texas A&M easily took a 1-0 lead in doubles and never let it up. In singles, senior Sam Garforth-Bles and senior Christian Saravia pushed their matches to three sets, bu it was no use. The Owls went back home overwhelmed. With the loss, Rice ended its season-high seven winning streak.

Men's Tennis puts streak at five

(03/30/12 12:00am)

Before their recent five-game winning streak, it looked like the Owls' ground was breaking from underneath them. What seemed like a promising season at the start was starting to turn sour with Rice's 8-5 record and season-low ranking of 64. Two weeks later, the Owls have moved up 22 spots and have added to their NCAA tournament resume impressive wins against ranked opponents the University of Memphis, Tulane University and the University of Denver.
