Stay safe and enjoy this year's Beer Bike
Beer Bike is just around the corner, and the Thresher urges students to recognize that this large-scale event will provide an opportunity for us to demonstrate responsible and safe behavior, especially in light of the recent incidents and ongoing conversation regarding Rice's alcohol culture and the alcohol policy. While the high number of students needing alcohol-related Emergency Medical Services transports during Night of Decadence is atypical at Rice, it is important to acknowledge that Rice students have made poor decisions in the past regarding alcohol, compromising their safety and placing themselves in dangerous situations. The Thresher hopes that we as students have since become more aware of our behavior and decisions around alcohol and will be especially attuned to these during Beer Bike. Students across campus and alumni across the nation look forward to this one day of the year. It is a tradition that brings the campus together on a day filled with spirit, fun and competition. Amid the fun and games of Beer Bike and Willy Week, we all need to make an effort to remember the iconic creativity and enthusiasm that defines this week. Beer Bike is about beer, fun and spirit, and that should never change. However, the Thresher also commends the creators of the Academic Cup for introducing a different kind of competition into this week's festivities, and we hope other students will continue to act in this vein and concentrate on rivalry and energy in addition to the drinking that is integral to Beer Bike.

Summer indie staples serenade House of Blues on Peach Pit and Briston Maroney’s “Long Hair, Long Life” tour.
A crowd gathered at House of Blues Houston on June 18 to hear the upbeat bedroom pop that got many of them through high school. Titled the “Long Hair, Long Life” tour (see the band members), this collaboration between Peach Pit and Briston Maroney felt like a time capsule to 2017: a setlist teeming with both original songs and music from their latest albums, “Magpie” and “JIMMY”, and an unspoken dress code of cargo shorts, graphic T-Shirts and backward caps.

Worth the wait: Andrew Thomas Huang practices patience
Andrew Thomas Huang says that patience is essential to being an artist. His proof? A film that has spent a decade in production, a career shaped by years in the music industry and a lifelong commitment to exploring queer identity and environmental themes — the kinds of stories, he said, that take time to tell right.
