XC teams place fifth at regionals

Freshman Grace Forbes finished sixth at last weekend’s cross-country NCAA South Central Regional Championships, qualifying for the NCAA championship meet this Saturday, Nov. 23. Both the men’s and women’s cross-country teams placed fifth in their respective races, marking the conclusion of the teams’ seasons.

Swimming falls to Texas A&M

No. 12 Texas A&M University defeated Rice in swimming 158-102 on Saturday at the Owls’ first home dual meet of the year.  The loss was Rice’s first  of the season, dropping the team’s record to 3-1.

In 1962, during his famous “We choose to go to the moon” speech at Rice Stadium, President John F. Kennedy posed a question to the audience. “Why does Rice play Texas?” Kennedy said.

Bloomgren should stick with Green at QB

Rice football fell to Army West Point 14-7 last Friday, but that shouldn’t be a reason for head coach Mike Bloomgren to make a change to the starting quarterback position. After leaving the status of the position up in the air for nearly the entire offseason, and even stating that he would be willing to open the season playing multiple quarterbacks, Bloomgren named redshirt freshman Wiley Green the opening day starter at last Tuesday’s news conference.

Football finishes season with a win

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the Rice football team finally found something to be thankful for. During the final game of head coach Mike Bloomgren’s inaugural season, the Owls defeated Old Dominion University 27-13, raising Rice’s record to 2-11 and giving Rice its first win against an FBS program this year.

Football struggles in C-USA opener

In a scene eerily reminiscent of the 2017 Owls and their anemic offense, the Rice football team gained only 262 total yards in a 40-22 loss to the University of Southern Mississippi on Saturday. The loss dropped Rice’s record to 1-3 for the year and handed the Owls a defeat in their conference opener.
