“Puzzle” affords a deserved spotlight for Kelly Macdonald, but nothing else shines

There’s not much to solve in Marc Turtletaub’s new film, “Puzzle.” The film follows Agnes, a suburban housewife who can best be described by the word “beige,” as she realizes her independence and self-worth through – you guessed it – jigsaw puzzles. It’s fitting that the catalyst to her change is as surprisingly quaint as both Agnes’ character and the film’s premise.


All-clear called after fatal shooting nearby prompts shelter-in-place at BRC

Rice University Police Department advised a shelter in place at the BioScience Research Collaborative Friday morning after a Houston Methodist Hospital doctor was fatally shot nearby. Several minutes later, RUPD issued an all-clear update and the Houston Police Department confirmed the shooter was no longer in the area.


Commencement 2018: Bloomberg stresses importance of honesty in commencement address

Four years ago, the class of 2018 walked through the Sallyport into the Academic Quad for the first time, hailed by fireworks and cheered on by upperclassmen. Last weekend, they sat in the same quad in caps and gowns as their friends and families looked on expectantly. The cheering classes of upperclassmen who had led them through Orientation Week had graduated, and now, it was their turn to walk out of the Sallyport.

As three Student Association presidential candidates prepared for their opening statements for the debate hosted by the Thresher last Friday night, students filed in past a large paper banner painted #letgillisdebate. Voting for all SA candidates begins tomorrow, Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. and closes Feb. 26.


​Coordinators reject Beer Bike proposals, consider alternatives

Campuswide Beer Bike coordinators Erica Zhong and Joyce Moon are working on implementing a stricter safety certification process for this year’s race. They said they decided not to implement any of the proposed changes to the tradition this year after colleges’ votes were counted amid debate and an abstention from the Graduate Student Association.
