The best coffee shops in Houston, according to a barista

(01/16/19 3:28am)

Hello, Coffee Plebeians of Rice University. How’s it going? Are your classes off to an okay start? Be honest — how many Nutty Bees have you bought so far this semester? If your tetra is gone, and you’re tired of the dead-eyed stares you get on Fondy 6th, maybe it’s time to venture off campus for some sweet, fresh study grinds. I know we all love the ~vibes~ at Chaüs, but sometimes (only sometimes) it’s worthwhile to get your fix outside of the hedges. As a maker (and keeper) of coffee, I hope to provide you with a unique look at some of the best (and worst) coffee shops around Houston.

Kali Uchis’ delivers on “Isolation” tour performance

(10/04/18 7:48pm)

When the crowd caught its first glimpse of Kali Uchis’s silhouette behind a silken screen at House of Blues on Sept. 28, there was a collective gasp – and then the screaming started. The eclectic, R&B singer-songwriter began dancing almost as soon as the crowd started chanting her name. When she parted the screen and slipped onto the stage, she did so with the confidence of someone who knows she deserves to bask in the limelight. Uchis released her debut album “Isolation” in April 2018 to critical acclaim, garnering the attention of a wide crowd, including Snoop Dogg and Juanes, a Colombian superstar.

V2C2 committee’s bureaucracy may fail to obtain strong ideas from students

(10/04/17 4:25am)

The Student Association voted last week to create a 10-member standing committee that will enumerate 100 or more ideas for Rice’s Second Vision for the Second Century. The original Vision for the Second Century motivated Rice to construct McMurtry and Duncan Colleges, expand the international student population and fund more research on campus. V2C2 may incite changes of similar magnitude, and so while we’re pleased that students are being consulted in this vision for the next 100 years at Rice, the current plan for obtaining student input is remarkably problematic. Because of the structure of the committee and the process through which ideas will be chosen, the student body as a whole will have limited influence on V2C2.

Network update improves speed, security

(01/20/16 5:33pm)

Nine of the residential colleges’ wired networks were upgraded over winter break to a more advanced system that will provide better security, called Identity Service Engine. The other two colleges, Duncan and McMurtry, had previously been upgraded this summer as part of a pilot program, according to William Deigaard, director of networking, telecommunications and data centers. These changes do not affect the current wireless network.
