After winning a match against Prairie View A&M University on March 2 in which the Rice men’s tennis team convincingly won the doubles point and all six singles matches, the Owls lost 1-6 to No. 3 University of Texas, Austin. Before each Rice baseball home game this season, you can find junior pitcher Kel Bordwine playing ping pong at Baker College or dining at Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, where he always eats the same meal in a specific order. But once the game starts, you can expect to see Bordwine on the mound frequently, after he finished last season with a solid 3.69 ERA as opponents hit for a .258 average against him in nine starts.

(10/02/19 1:56am)

Originally from Russia, sophomore tennis players Anastasia and Victoria Smirnova are twin sisters, and both have been playing tennis with their family since they were six years old. Though the Smirnovas’ parents were athletes themselves, they played a slightly different sport: table tennis. Their father was ranked as high as No. 11 in the world in table tennis and participated in three different Olympic Games; similarly, their mother played table tennis as a member of the Russian junior national table tennis team.

Stayin’ Alive: Trammell continues to excel

(09/25/19 2:05am)

The 5-foot-10-inch, 185-pound player you see receiving footballs on kickoffs and running full speed into opposing players for the Rice football team is none other than junior wide receiver Austin Trammell. Though he may be smaller in stature than most football players, Trammell has been a kick punt returner for the Owls since his freshman year. But Trammell’s talent isn’t just limited to special teams. Last year, Trammell was also the team leader in receptions and receiving yards. After Trammell’s on-the-field performance during his sophomore year, he was named team captain this season.
