As the semester wraps up, it’s a good time to take stock of how Rice Athletics is doing as a whole. At this moment, we believe that there is good reason to be happy and optimistic with how the Owls are performing now and will perform in the future. On a sport by sport basis, Rice sports teams are ending the decade at a peak.

Last week, the NCAA Board of Governors voted unanimously to allow student-athletes to “benefit from the use of their name, image and likeness in a manner consistent with the collegiate model.” Now, before you get super excited about playing as the Rice Owls in a future EA Sports video game, it is important to note that while the NCAA announcement is a step in the right direction, it is best taken with a grain of salt.

The men’s basketball season is almost here, with the Owls’ season opener less than a week away. Last season, Rice finished No. 11 in Conference USA and finished 13-19 overall and 8-10 in conference play. Both of those win totals improved from the 2017-2018 season, where the Owls finished with seven wins overall and four in C-USA.

Rice football was defeated by Wake Forest University by a score of 41-21 in its home opener on Friday, but the game itself took a back seat to a scary situation in the first quarter.

Fresh off their first loss of the season, the football team is looking to rebound for their first win of the season as they face Wake Forest University on Friday night at Rice Stadium. In their first game of the season, the Owls fell to Army West Point by a score of 14-7. The two teams were tied up for a majority of the game, until the Black Knights scored late in the fourth quarter. Rice had a chance to tie up the contest, but turned the ball over on downs with under two minutes left.

Rice men’s basketball will experience a shakeup in both its player roster and staff next year. According to multiple anonymous sources, freshman center Quentin Millora-Brown has entered the NCAA transfer portal with intent to transfer and assistant coach Chris Kreider has left his position to join Georgia State University as an assistant coach.

Sophomore golfer Jake Benson first picked up a club when he was five years old. Hailing from Nottingham, England, Benson gained experience playing in the British Isles, where the sport originated. Before coming to Rice, he attended the Open Championship — the oldest golf tournament in the world — seven times, visiting some of the world’s finest courses, such as St. Andrews and Royal Birkdale Golf Club. Growing up, Benson says that he took inspiration from one of Europe’s best-ever golfers.

Beer Bike is arguably the most important social event on the Rice calendar. Students call it the best day of the year or even Christmas. From the early wake-up to the Martel sundeck to the water balloon fight to the races, it is a day of celebration and a journey outside of the normal obligations of being a college student.

The regular season and conference tournament champion Rice Owls are headed to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2005. Even though the Owls moved up three spots in the Associated Press poll to No. 21, they were selected as the No. 12 seed in the Chicago region of the tournament bracket. In its first-round matchup, Rice will face Marquette University, the No. 5 seed, in College Station on Friday.

Rice women’s basketball clinched the regular season Conference USA title on Saturday with a win against the University of North Texas. The Owls are C-USA Regular Season Champions for the first time in program history.

For the first time in the 41-year history of the women’s basketball program, the Owls are ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. After receiving votes in each of the last three weeks, Rice makes its debut ranked at No. 25. Head coach Tina Langley said that she has many people to thank for her team’s success.

At first thought, a punter might not seem too important to a football team’s success. But quietly, the punter does a lot of work that may go unnoticed. Pinning the ball inside the opposing team’s 10-yard line, bombing a 60-yard punt to escape poor field position or punting the ball away from a dangerous return man can all be difference-makers in a game. Not many punters are the star of their team. However, this past season, punter Jack Fox was the star of Rice football. Now he has the National Football League in his sights.

This upcoming Sunday marks one of America’s most anticipated events of the year: the Super Bowl. The NFL’s two conference champions face off as the AFC champion New England Patriots take on the NFC champion Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII. According to Nielsen Media Research, which measures television viewership, the Super Bowl has been watched by more than 100 million people each year since 2010.

The Rice women’s basketball team extended its win streak to six games on Saturday when it defeated the University of Texas, El Paso by a score of 76-42. Coming off of a dominating performance against the University of Texas, San Antonio, the Owls dismantled UTEP in similar fashion. Rice led by double digits for the vast majority of the game. Head coach Tina Langley praised her team’s performance.

Rice men’s basketball bounced back from its first loss of the season by defeating Alabama A&M University on Monday by a score of 73-59. Head coach Scott Pera said that he was happy with the team’s performance in the game’s final minutes.
“I'm really, really proud of how we finished that game,” Pera said. “This team is showing signs, now through the exhibition season and playing a couple of live games that they're handling things better with a lead down the stretch.”

In a game where the pace kept by both teams was extremely quick, Rice men’s basketball opened its season with a win over Saint Leo University by a score of 80-64. Owls head coach Scott Pera said he was happy with his team’s effort.
