Two weeks ago, I went to Methodist Hospital for a cortisone injection in an attempt to relieve the pain I've been having from a herniated disk. When the doctor's office called me with instructions, I asked them how much this procedure would cost. They said they wouldn't know until they processed my insurance. (0) comments

On Nov. 11, University Architect David Rodd spoke to the Student Association to outline Rice's Master Plan, a comprehensive overview of how Rice and its campus are expected to change over the next five decades. As he presented his plan, I couldn't help but notice the constant mention of words such as "expansion," "growth" and "increase," with reference to both the undergraduate population and academic resources. Rice touts itself as a high-caliber institution, complete with small, intimate classes and endless opportunities for undergraduate advancement. As I accepted Rice's offer of admission, Rice's five-to-one student-teacher ratio kept flashing through my mind. (7) comments

Dear Lance, By now, we're sure you've heard the news: Beer Bike is changing (see story, page 1). This year, the first in which the number of colleges runs into double digits, the most sacrosanct part of Rice's culture will look … different. See, two new colleges have ridden in on their environmentally friendly horses and decided to crash the party, changing up the game plan and turning this year's Beer Bike into a cauldron of concern and confusion. Last Saturday, the football team won its Homecoming game against Tulane University (see story, page 14). This isn't a misprint. For those following the team's progress - even for those blissfully unaware - the win was an unexpected godsend. What better way to welcome hundreds of Rice alumni back to their former home? (And what better way to encourage them to donate money to the university than with a victory-infused pride?) The team hasn't had an easy season, by any means. (1) comment

In an article we published earlier this month ("NOD attracts whole new world of scantily clad," Nov. 6), the Thresher incorrectly reported that attendance at the annual Night of Decadence increased by 1,000 from last year. The attendance increased by 100. The Thresher regrets the error. (0) comments

Rice-BCM merger clearly thought-out To the Editor: Like many, I have followed the discussions involving the Rice-Baylor College of Medicine merger as closely and as carefully as I could over the last few months, especially the carefully crafted reports from the Faculty Merger Review Committee, the Faculty Advisory Committee on Collaborative Activities and the work of the subcommittee represented by what has come to be called the Boles Report on the Medical Humanities, in which I took an active part.
